يَـٰيَحْيَىٰ خُذِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ بِقُوَّةٍ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْحُكْمَ صَبِيًّا ﴿12﴾

(It was said to his son): "O Yahyâ (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurât (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child.

(Ayah 12){ يٰيَحْيٰى خُذِ الْكِتٰبَ بِقُوَّةٍ … :} Allah Almighty left out many things before this that are self-evident. In short, Yahya (peace be upon him) was born, became somewhat sensible, so to prepare him as the successor of his father, Allah Almighty commanded him: O Yahya! Hold the Torah with strength, meaning memorize it, understand its meanings and implications, act upon it, and enforce its commands with full strength upon yourself and the entire nation. For this purpose, Allah Almighty granted him the ability to judge even in childhood, and he, in his youth, became the inheritor of his father's knowledge and virtue, the leadership of Bani Israel, and the legacy of revelation and prophethood, and began teaching the Torah and making decisions for Bani Israel with full strength. The father was weak and he was young, so he began teaching people the knowledge of the Book in place of his father. If someone says how this can happen in childhood, the answer is that the entire matter of prophethood is extraordinary, that is, against the usual routine, habit, and custom of the world, so one should not be surprised at this extraordinary event either.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. 12. 1 That is, Allah granted Yahya (peace be upon him) to Zakariya (peace be upon him), and when he grew somewhat older, though he was still a child, Allah commanded him to hold fast to the Book, meaning to act upon it firmly. By "Book" is meant either the Torah or a specific book revealed to him, of which we have no knowledge.

12. 2 By "Hukm" is meant wisdom, intellect, understanding, comprehension of the religious rulings recorded in the Book, the combination of knowledge and action, or prophethood. Imam Shawkani states that there is nothing preventing all these things from being included in "Hukm."

(Allah commanded, while he was still a child:) "O Yahya (John)! Hold firmly to the Book (the Torah)." And We granted him wisdom [13] while still a child.

The Qualities of Sayyiduna Yahya (peace be upon him):

That is, learn the Book of Allah yourself and teach it to others as well. Act fully upon its commands yourself and invite others to do the same. This was the very mission for which Sayyiduna Zakariyya (peace be upon him) had prayed. Thus, Allah honored Sayyiduna Yahya with the rank of prophethood as soon as he reached the age of maturity and gave him this command. Along with this, he was also granted the power of judgment, the ability of ijtihad, deep understanding of religion, the ability to form correct opinions in matters, and the authority to make decisions in affairs.
