قَالَ أَرَءَيْتَ إِذْ أَوَيْنَآ إِلَى ٱلصَّخْرَةِ فَإِنِّى نَسِيتُ ٱلْحُوتَ وَمَآ أَنسَىٰنِيهُ إِلَّا ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَهُۥ ۚ وَٱتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُۥ فِى ٱلْبَحْرِ عَجَبًا ﴿63﴾
He said: "Do you remember when we betook ourselves to the rock? I indeed forgot the fish; none but Shaitân (Satan) made me forget to remember it. It took its course into the sea in a strange (way)!"
قَالَ qāla He said
أَرَءَيْتَ ara-ayta Did you see
إِذْ idh when
أَوَيْنَآ awaynā we retired
إِلَى ilā to
ٱلصَّخْرَةِ l-ṣakhrati the rock
فَإِنِّى fa-innī Then indeed, I
نَسِيتُ nasītu [I] forgot
ٱلْحُوتَ l-ḥūta the fish
وَمَآ wamā And not
أَنسَىٰنِيهُ ansānīhu made me forget it
إِلَّا illā except
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ l-shayṭānu the Shaitaan
أَنْ an that
أَذْكُرَهُۥ ۚ adhkurahu I mention it
وَٱتَّخَذَ wa-ittakhadha And it took
سَبِيلَهُۥ sabīlahu its way
فِى into
ٱلْبَحْرِ l-baḥri the sea
عَجَبًۭا ʿajaban amazingly

63. 1. That is, the fish came to life and went into the sea, and Allah made a tunnel-like path for it in the sea. Hazrat Yushaʿ (Yusha) saw the fish going into the sea and the path being made, but he forgot to tell Hazrat Musa (Moses). After resting, they started their journey again, traveling that day and the following night. When the next day Hazrat Musa felt tired and hungry, he said to his young companion, "Bring the breakfast, let us eat." He replied, "The fish, at the place where we rested against the rock, came to life and went into the sea, and in a wondrous way it made its path, which I forgot to mention to you. Shaytan made me forget."
