وَيَوْمَ نُسَيِّرُ ٱلْجِبَالَ وَتَرَى ٱلْأَرْضَ بَارِزَةً وَحَشَرْنَـٰهُمْ فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا ﴿47﴾

And (remember) the Day We shall cause the mountains to pass away (like clouds of dust), and you will see the earth as a levelled plain, and we shall gather them all together so as to leave not one of them behind.

وَيَوْمَ wayawma And the Day
نُسَيِّرُ nusayyiru We will cause (to) move
ٱلْجِبَالَ l-jibāla the mountains
وَتَرَى watarā and you will see

بَارِزَةًۭ bārizatan (as) a leveled plain
وَحَشَرْنَـٰهُمْ waḥasharnāhum and We will gather them
فَلَمْ falam and not
نُغَادِرْ nughādir We will leave behind
مِنْهُمْ min'hum from them
أَحَدًۭا aḥadan anyone

(Ayah 47) ➊ {وَ يَوْمَ نُسَيِّرُ الْجِبَالَ …: ’’ يَوْمَ ‘‘ ’’ أُذْكُرْ ‘‘} is in the accusative due to an omitted verb. In accordance with the fleeting nature of the world and the permanence of the reward in the Hereafter, now the Day of Resurrection is mentioned, that is, remember the day when the mountains will be set in motion and, passing through various states, will finally become like a mirage. The seas, mountains, and all the high and low places of the earth will be leveled, and there will remain no obstacle or cover on the entire earth for the gaze. For details of the states the mountains will undergo, see Surah Naba (20), Haqqah (13 to 15), Tur (9, 10), Takwir (3), Naml (88), Ma'arij (8, 9), Qari'ah (4, 5), Muzzammil (14), and Waqi'ah (5, 6). ➋ { وَ حَشَرْنٰهُمْ فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ اَحَدًا :} Allah Almighty will gather together all the people, the first and the last; He will leave none behind. See Surah Waqi'ah (49, 50). In another place, it is clarified that in this gathering, all creatures besides jinn and humans will also be included, as He said: «وَ مَا مِنْ دَآبَّةٍ فِي الْاَرْضِ وَ لَا طٰٓىِٕرٍ يَّطِيْرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ اِلَّاۤ اُمَمٌ اَمْثَالُكُمْ مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِي الْكِتٰبِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ثُمَّ اِلٰى رَبِّهِمْ يُحْشَرُوْنَ » [ الأنعام : ۳۸ ] "And there is no creature that moves on the earth nor any bird that flies with its two wings but they are communities like you. We have not neglected anything in the Book; then to their Lord they will be gathered." Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ لَتُؤَدَّنَّ الْحُقُوْقُ إِلٰی أَهْلِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ حَتّٰي يُقَادَ لِلشَّاةِ الْجَلْحَاءِ مِنَ الشَّاةِ الْقَرْنَاءِ] [ مسلم، البر والصلۃ، باب تحریم الظلم : ۲۵۸۲ ] "On the Day of Resurrection, the rights will certainly be given to those entitled to them, to the extent that the hornless goat will be given retribution from the horned goat."

47. 1. This is a description of the terrors of the Day of Judgment and the great events. The meaning of "we will set the mountains in motion" is that the mountains will be removed from their places and will fly like carded wool, and the mountains will be like colored carded wool. When such strong things as mountains will be eliminated from the earth, then how will houses, trees, and other similar things be able to maintain their existence? That is why it is further stated: "and you will see the earth as a clear, open plain."

47. 2. That is, the first and the last, the small and the great, the disbeliever and the believer, all will be gathered; no one will remain lying in the depths of the earth, nor will anyone be able to hide anywhere after coming out of the grave.

47. And on the Day We will set the mountains in motion [43], and you will see the earth leveled and bare, and We will gather them all together, leaving not a single one of them behind.

[43] That is, even on things as solid as mountains, Allah's law of decline will be in effect; they too will be uprooted from their places and will fly about in the air like clouds drift about. [27: 88] All the ups and downs of the earth will be leveled; the earth will become like a flat plain. This will be the Day of Gathering (Yawm al-Hashr), in which all people will be gathered together, and no soul will be able to escape from this gathering.
