Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 44) ➊ The meaning of {هُنَالِكَالْوَلَايَةُلِلّٰهِالْحَقِّ : ’’ هُنَالِكَ ‘‘} is both "at that time" and "at that place," therefore, keeping both in view, the translation has been done accordingly at this point. The meaning of {’’ الْوَلَايَةُ ‘‘} with a fatha on the waw is "help," and with a kasrah on the waw, it means "authority, power," that is, at this point, only the help of the True Allah can be effective, as has been mentioned in the commentary of the previous verse.
➋ The scholars are unanimous that both {’’خَيْرٌ‘‘} and {’’شَرٌّ‘‘} are comparative nouns, that is, originally they were {’’اَخْيَرُ‘‘} and {’’اَشَرُّ‘‘}, and for ease, they were made {’’خَيْرٌ‘‘} and {’’شَرٌّ‘‘}. That is, in giving recompense, Allah is the best of all; no one has a recompense like His or better than His, and in terms of good outcome, He alone is the best. No one has an outcome like the one He grants. The word {’’ خَيْرٌ ‘‘} is repeated for emphasis and exaggeration.
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf
Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
44. 1. The meaning of ولایۃ is friendship and help, that is, at this place every believer and disbeliever comes to know that no one except Allah is capable of helping anyone or saving from His punishment. This is the reason that even the greatest tyrants and oppressors are compelled to express faith at that moment, although the faith of that time is neither beneficial nor accepted. Just as the Quran has narrated about Pharaoh that when he was about to drown, he said: امنت انہ لا الہ الا الذی امنت بہ بنوا اسرائیل وانا من المسلمین (Surah Yunus) — I have believed in that Allah in whom the Children of Israel have believed, and I am among the Muslims. Regarding other disbelievers, it is said: when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in the One Allah and we deny those whom we used to associate as partners with Allah" (Surah Al-Mu’min). If ولایت is with a kasrah on the waw, then its meaning is authority and powers, as these meanings have been adopted in the translation. Ibn Kathir.
44. 2. That is, He alone is the best rewarder to His friends and the one who honors them with a good end.
