And verily they were about to frighten you so much as to drive you out from the land. But in that case they would not have stayed (therein) after you, except for a little while.

(Ayah 76) ➊ The meaning of {وَاِنْكَادُوْالَيَسْتَفِزُّوْنَكَ …:’’ اِسْتَفَزَّ ‘‘} is to mislead someone by causing them to panic. In {’’ الْاَرْضِ ‘‘}, the definite article "al" is for a specific reference, meaning the land of Makkah. That is, when all the efforts of the Quraysh to stop the Prophet (peace be upon him) from monotheism failed, they began to severely trouble and distress him so that he would become anxious and leave Makkah.
➋ { وَاِذًالَّايَلْبَثُوْنَخِلٰفَكَاِلَّاقَلِيْلًا:} Thus, this is exactly what happened: later, when he (peace be upon him) migrated to Madinah, after one and a half years, their prominent leaders were killed at Badr, the people of Makkah suffered famine and fear due to his supplication against them, and eventually, in the eighth (8th) year of Hijrah, Makkah itself was conquered, which destroyed their glory and rule. For an arrogant nation, is it not punishment enough that the very person whom they expelled became the conqueror and master of their city?

76. 1. This is a reference to the plot that the Quraysh of Makkah devised to expel the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah, from which Allah saved him. 76. 2. That is, if according to their plan they had expelled you from Makkah, then they too would not have remained for long after that, meaning they would have been seized by the punishment of Allah.

They were close to unsettling you from the land (of Makkah), to drive you out from there [94]. And if that were to happen, they would not remain there after you except for a little while.
[94] The Beginning of the Downfall of the Disbelievers of Makkah with the Migration:
At the time when this verse was revealed, the persecution of the Muslims by the disbelievers of Makkah had reached its peak. The revelation of such a verse during those days was a clear prophecy regarding the disbelievers of Makkah, which they, in their intoxication of power, considered to be nothing more than a threat—just as similar hints are found in other verses of punishment related to previous nations. However, the coming circumstances and events proved this prophecy to be true word for word. One year after the revelation of this verse, the Prophet ﷺ was forced to leave Makkah and migrate to Madinah. After that, the power of the Quraysh began to decline steadily, and only eight years later, the situation was completely reversed. Those who had committed oppression and persecution themselves became subjugated and were compelled to beg the Prophet of Islam for mercy. Later, most of them accepted Islam. Even two years after that, the land of Arabia was cleansed of the filth of disbelief and polytheism.
