Surah Al-Israa (17) — Ayah 75

إِذًا لَّأَذَقْنَـٰكَ ضِعْفَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ وَضِعْفَ ٱلْمَمَاتِ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُ لَكَ عَلَيْنَا نَصِيرًا ﴿75﴾
In that case We would have made you taste a double portion (of punishment) in this life and a double portion (of punishment) after death. And then you would have found none to help you against Us.
إِذًۭا idhan Then
لَّأَذَقْنَـٰكَ la-adhaqnāka We (would) have made you taste
ضِعْفَ ḍiʿ'fa double
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ l-ḥayati (in) the life
وَضِعْفَ waḍiʿ'fa and double
ٱلْمَمَاتِ l-mamāti (after) the death
ثُمَّ thumma Then
لَا not
تَجِدُ tajidu you (would) have found
لَكَ laka for you
عَلَيْنَا ʿalaynā against Us
نَصِيرًۭا naṣīran any helper

(Ayah 75){ اِذًا لَّاَذَقْنٰكَ ضِعْفَ الْحَيٰوةِ …:} This is because the higher a person's rank, the harsher the punishment for committing a sin. Thus, regarding the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, it is stated: «يٰنِسَآءَ النَّبِيِّ مَنْ يَّاْتِ مِنْكُنَّ بِفَاحِشَةٍ مُّبَيِّنَةٍ يُّضٰعَفْ لَهَا الْعَذَابُ ضِعْفَيْنِ » [ الأحزاب :۳۰ ] "O wives of the Prophet! Whoever among you commits a clear indecency, the punishment for her will be doubled."
