كُلُّ ذَٰلِكَ كَانَ سَيِّئُهُۥ عِندَ رَبِّكَ مَكْرُوهًا ﴿38﴾
All the bad aspects of these (the above mentioned things) are hateful to your Lord.

(Ayah 38) ➊ From {كُلُّ ذٰلِكَ كَانَ سَيِّئُهٗ … : ’’ وَ لَا تَجْعَلْ مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَ ‘‘} to {’’ وَ لَنْ تَبْلُغَ الْجِبَالَ طُوْلًا ‘‘ }, twenty-five things have been mentioned, some of which have been commanded and some prohibited. Among them, { ’’سَيِّئٌ‘‘ } (evil) are those which have been prohibited, and those things which have been commanded to be acted upon, not fulfilling them is also {’’سَيِّئٌ‘‘} (bad). Among all these things, those that are evil have always been detested (detestable) by Allah. The concept of perpetuity is being expressed by {’’ كَانَ ‘‘}.

➋ The word { مَكْرُوْهًا :} makruh, in the terminology of jurists, is of a lesser degree than haram, meaning that not doing it is better than doing it, but in the terminology of the Qur’an and Sunnah, the word makruh often comes in the meaning of haram, as all the things prohibited in these verses are haram, not makruh in the juristic sense. That is why, when establishing chapters in Sahih Bukhari and Tirmidhi, the word karahiyyat is written, but what is meant by it is prohibition (haram). Sometimes, in the Book and Sunnah, the word makruh comes in the meaning of makruh as used by jurists, but in most places, the word makruh comes in the meaning of haram, as is the case in all the verses under commentary.

38. 1. That is, among the things that have been mentioned, whichever are bad and have been prohibited, they are detestable.

38. All [48] such things are evil in the sight of your Lord and are detested.

[48] That is, among the above-mentioned fourteen commands, most are those from which one has been prohibited. Committing them is extremely disliked by Allah, and failing to carry out those things which have been commanded is equally disliked.
