Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 17) ➊ {وَ كَمْ اَهْلَكْنَا مِنَ الْقُرُوْنِ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ نُوْحٍ: } This {’’ كَمْ ‘‘} news is that whose meaning is "many." "Qarn" refers to the people of an era; generally, this period is considered to be one hundred years. After the command to obey Allah came through the messengers, the nations and generations destroyed due to their disobedience (fisq) are mentioned as examples, as if to say, "Do not even ask how many generations We destroyed," such as the people of ‘Ad, Thamud, Shu‘ayb, and Lut (peace be upon them), and the people of Pharaoh, etc. It is said "after Noah (peace be upon him)" because before that, all people were upon monotheism. See Surah Al-Baqarah (2:213).
➋ { وَ كَفٰى بِرَبِّكَ بِذُنُوْبِ … :} This sentence is related here in two ways: first, that Allah destroyed all those generations only as a consequence of their sins, because He is fully sufficient in being All-Aware and All-Seeing of His servants. For the construction of {’’ كَفٰى بِرَبِّكَ ‘‘}, see verse (14) of this surah. The second relation is that the disbelievers of Quraysh and the entire ummah are warned that do not think this matter was only with those nations; rather, if you also do not obey Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and His commands, and commit fisq and fujur, then the same will happen to you, so reform yourselves. In this, along with a warning to the disobedient, there is also comfort for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his successors.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

17. 1. They too were destroyed under the same principle of destruction.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

17. And how many generations We destroyed after Noah [17]. And your Lord is sufficient as One who is aware of and seeing the sins of His servants.

The First Punishment Befell the People of Noah ﷺ Because There Was No Polytheism Before That:

From this verse, it is understood that from Sayyiduna Adam ؑ to Sayyiduna Noah ﷺ, all people were established upon monotheism and were unfamiliar with polytheism. Authentic hadiths also support this, that the beginning of polytheism was with the people of Noah, when five of their elders died, and Satan deceived them into making their statues. In this way, idol worship began among mankind. And polytheism is that evil from which other evils are born, and when society becomes engulfed in these evils, it becomes deserving of punishment. And among such punishments, the first was the flood of Noah, then after that, punishments continued to befall other nations, whose mention has already occurred several times before.
