Say (to the disbelievers): "If you possessed the treasure of the Mercy of my Lord (wealth, money, provision.), then you would surely hold back (from spending) for fear of (being exhausted), and man is ever miserly!"

(Ayah 100) ➊ { قُلْلَّوْاَنْتُمْتَمْلِكُوْنَ … :} That is, if you were the owners of the treasures of my Lord’s mercy, which can never be exhausted, even then you would not give anyone a single penny. The result of this extreme miserliness is that you cannot tolerate Allah granting blessings to anyone, nor can you tolerate that Allah has honored Muhammad (peace be upon him) with prophethood, because you envy and are miserly regarding the prophethood and messengership of Muhammad (peace be upon him). Both of these traits are extremely reprehensible. For similar verses, see Surah An-Nisa (53 to 55). In Ruh al-Ma’ani, it is mentioned that there are various opinions regarding the connection with the previous verses, but they are forced interpretations.
➋ { وَكَانَالْاِنْسَانُقَتُوْرًا:’’ قَتَرَيَقْتُرُقَتْرًاوَقُتُوْرًا‘‘} (n, d) To be tight-fisted in spending, extreme miserliness, to the extent that one is even miserly in spending on oneself. In this, the natural and inherent trait of man has been described, which has always existed in him, and from which deliverance can only be achieved through those deeds that have been mentioned as a remedy for the “impatient man” in Surah Al-Ma’arij, verses (19 to 35).

10. 1. The meaning of خشیۃ الانفاق is: خشیۃ ان ینفقوا فیفتقروا. Out of fear that if they spend, they will finish it off, and after that, they will become poor. Although this is the divine treasure which is never-ending, but since man is inherently narrow-hearted, he acts with miserliness. At another place, Allah Almighty has said (اَمْلَھُمْنَصِيْبٌمِّنَالْمُلْكِفَاِذًالَّايُؤْتُوْنَالنَّاسَنَقِيْرًا) (4:53). That is, if they were to get any share from Allah’s kingdom, they would not give anything to people. نقیر is the small pit in a date stone, meaning they would not give even as much as a speck to anyone. It is Allah’s mercy and His grace and generosity that He has opened the doors of His treasures for people. As it is mentioned in the hadith, Allah’s hands are full, He spends day and night, but there is no decrease in it. Say, "If you possessed the treasures of my Lord’s mercy, you would surely hold them back for fear of spending, for man is ever stingy [118]."
[118] The Narrow-mindedness of the Disbelievers of Makkah and Human Nature:
The chiefs of the Quraysh who had girded themselves for your opposition did not do so because they considered you a liar, nor because they did not understand the arguments of the call to faith. Rather, the real reason was that if they accepted Islam, they saw their leadership and chieftainship being taken away from them. And they would have to live under the authority of the Prophet of Islam. Also, if Islam spread, the honor and dignity they enjoyed throughout Arabia due to their custodianship of the Ka'bah would also be lost. Therefore, their utmost effort was to eliminate Islam altogether, and in reality, man is indeed miserly by nature. He wants that no one else should rise up against him. Clarifying this, Allah said that even if they had the treasures of the earth, their condition would be such that they would not give anyone even a single penny, lest someone might one day stand against them. It is Allah's mercy that all kinds of treasures are with Him alone, and He bestows His grace upon whomever He wills, in whatever manner He wills.
