And make not your oaths a means of deception among yourselves, lest a foot should slip after being firmly planted, and you may have to taste the evil (punishment in this world) of having hindered (men) from the Path of Allâh (i.e. Belief in the Oneness of Allâh and His Messenger, Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم), and yours will be a great torment (i.e. the Fire of Hell in the Hereafter).

(Ayah94) ➊ {وَلَاتَتَّخِذُوْۤااَيْمَانَكُمْ …:} That is, do not let it happen that, seeing your deception and breach of trust, someone becomes an apostate, or the person who breaks the covenant himself falls into disbelief. Zamakhshari said that {’’ قَدَمٌ‘‘} is kept singular and indefinite so that even the slipping of one person’s foot and his turning away from Islam as a result of breach of trust is a very serious matter in the sight of Allah, let alone if many people become apostates because of this act. In the previous {’’ تَتَّخِذُوْۤااَيْمَانَكُمْدَخَلًۢابَيْنَكُمْ ‘‘}, the reason for deceiving by swearing an oath was mentioned, so in this verse, by saying {’’ لَاتَتَّخِذُوْۤااَيْمَانَكُمْدَخَلًۢا ‘‘}, its bad consequence is stated. ➋ {بِمَاصَدَدْتُّمْعَنْسَبِيْلِاللّٰهِ:} And you become a means of preventing people from Islam, and its burden comes upon you even in this world. ➌ {وَلَكُمْعَذَابٌعَظِيْمٌ:} And then you are afflicted with the great punishment of the Hereafter. The meaning is that do not bring Islam into disrepute so that those who believe fall into doubt, the sin of which will fall upon you. (Muwaddih)

94. 1. Muslims are again being prevented from the aforementioned breach of covenant, lest your moral decline causes someone else to stumble, and disbelievers, seeing your behavior, refrain from accepting Islam, and thus you become guilty of preventing people from the path of Allah and deserving of punishment. Some commentators have taken the pledge to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as the meaning here. That is, by breaking the pledge to the Prophet and then becoming apostate, seeing your intentions, others will also refrain from accepting Islam, and thus you will become deserving of double punishment. (Fath al-Qadeer)

And do not make your oaths a means of deceiving one another in your mutual dealings [98], lest your feet slip after being firmly planted, and you suffer evil consequences for having hindered others from the way of Allah, and there will be a great punishment for you (in the Hereafter).
[98] That is, when you are about to make a deal, your intention should be pure. There should be no intention of betrayal, dishonesty, or breach of covenant in your heart, and if you do so, there will be two harms: firstly, your own reputation will be destroyed and instead there will be disgrace and humiliation. Secondly, those who wish to embrace Islam, when they see that Muslims do the same things as disbelievers, why would they be inclined towards Islam? In this way, you yourself will become a cause of obstruction in the path of Islam. Therefore, besides disgrace and the destruction of reputation in this world, you will also be severely punished in the Hereafter.
