And they assign a portion of that which We have provided them unto what they know not (false deities). By Allâh, you shall certainly be questioned about (all) that you used to fabricate.

(Ayah56) {وَيَجْعَلُوْنَلِمَالَايَعْلَمُوْنَ …:’’ لَايَعْلَمُوْنَ ‘‘ } can have two meanings, and both are intended. One is that these polytheists assign a portion of the sustenance We have provided to those gods who know nothing at all, because only Allah is the Knower of the unseen and the seen. The second meaning is that they assign it to those about whom they have no knowledge. Neither do they know their reality nor their powerlessness; merely based on conjecture and hearsay, they dedicate what We have given them in their names. See Surah Al-An'am (36 to 38) and Surah Yunus (66). In the beginning of the verse, after mentioning these polytheists entirely in the third person, at the end (as a rhetorical shift), they are directly addressed to rebuke them and, swearing an oath, it is said: By My oath, you will surely be questioned about all the fabrications you have been inventing.

56. 1. That is, those whom they consider as fulfillers of needs, removers of difficulties, and deities, are either stone idols or jinn and devils, whose reality they do not even know. Similarly, no one knows the reality of the people buried in graves—what is happening to them there? Are they among Allah’s favored individuals or in some other list? No one knows these matters, but despite being unaware of their reality, these wrongdoers have made them partners with Allah and have allocated a share for them as offerings from the wealth given by Allah. In fact, if Allah’s share is left, it is left, but they do not reduce the share of their partners, as has been mentioned in Surah Al-An’am. 56. 2. The falsehood you attribute to Allah—that He has partners or associates—regarding this, you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection.

56. And they assign a portion of the sustenance We have provided them to those (partners) about whom they have no knowledge [53]. By Allah! You will surely be questioned about the lies you invent against Allah.
[53] That is, these polytheists make those things partners and sharers with Allah in their charities and alms which are lifeless idols or those lying in graves who can neither hear, nor speak, nor respond. They do not even know that anyone is calling upon them, nor can they move from their place. And the second meaning of this sentence is that the polytheists have not established from any authentic source of knowledge that Allah has actually made these deities His partners, or assigned them some tasks in the management of the universe, or given them authority over some regions of His dominion. Yet, these people persist in maintaining them as deities and believe that they can exercise influence in the universe and bring benefit or harm to others. Then, since they consider these beliefs to be religious doctrine and attribute these absurdities to Allah, therefore Allah will deal with them properly and will give them the appropriate punishment for this crime.
