Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 3) ➊ {ذَرْهُمْ يَاْكُلُوْا وَ يَتَمَتَّعُوْا: ’’ ذَرْ ‘‘ } is a verb of command from the example of "waw", only its imperative and present tense are used, for its other forms, derivatives of {’’تَرَكَ‘‘} are used. From {’’ يَتَمَتَّعُوْا ‘‘ ’’ لَهْوٌ ‘‘} the present tense of the "af'al" form is {’’ يُلْهِيْ ‘‘ }, which, being the answer to {’’ ذَرْ ‘‘} or due to the implied "lam amr", is in the jussive case; its "ya" and the "nun" of { ’’ يَاْكُلُوْا ‘‘} and {’’ يَتَمَتَّعُوْا ‘‘} have also dropped for the same reason. All these commands are to scold them, not to give them permission. For verses of this meaning, see Surah Mursalat (46), Surah Zukhruf (83), and Surah Tur (45), etc. From {’’ يَاْكُلُوْا وَ يَتَمَتَّعُوْا ‘‘} it is understood that the very purpose of the disbelievers' life is just this. {’’ الْاَمَلُ ‘‘} means hope, the desire to attain something, usually something whose attainment is far-fetched.

{ وَ يُلْهِهِمُ الْاَمَلُ:} Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: [ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّی اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَرَزَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ غَرَزًا ثُمَّ غَرَزَ إِلٰی جَنْبِهِ آخَرَ ثُمَّ غَرَزَ الثَّالِثَ فَأَبْعَدَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ هَلْ تَدْرُوْنَ مَا هٰذَا؟ قَالُوْا اَللّٰهُ وَرَسُوْلُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، قَالَ هٰذَا الْإِنْسَانُ وَهٰذَا أَجَلُهُ وَهٰذَا أَمَلُهُ يَتَعَاطَى الْأَمَلَ يَخْتَلِجُهُ دُوْنَ ذٰلِكَ ] [ مسند أحمد : 18/3، ح : ۱۱۱۳۸، إسنادہ جید ] "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) planted a stick in front of him, then drew another at its side, then drew a third one farther away, then said: 'Do you know what this is?' The people said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'This is man, and this is his appointed time (death), and that is his hope. He remains engaged in trying to attain his hope, but before he attains it, his appointed time comes in the way.'" Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): [ صَلاَحُ أَوَّلِ هٰذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بِالزُّهْدِ وَالْيَقِيْنِ وَيَهْلِكُ آخِرُهَا بِالْبُخْلِ وَالْأَمَلِ ] [ سلسلۃ الأحادیث الصحیحۃ : 1263/7،ح : ۳۴۲۷ ] "The rectification of the first part of this Ummah was with asceticism and certainty, and its last part will be destroyed by miserliness and hope (longing)."

3. 1. This is a warning and threat that the disbelievers and polytheists are not refraining from their disbelief and polytheism, so leave them; let them enjoy the worldly pleasures and fulfill their hopes. Soon they will come to know the outcome of their disbelief and polytheism.
