➋ {فِي الْاَصْفَادِ: ’’ الْاَصْفَادِ ‘‘ ’’صَفَدٌ‘‘} (with the fatha on fa) is the singular of "Al-Asfad" and refers to that chain which is put on the feet, or that collar with which the hands and feet are tied towards the neck. [ الوسیط للطنطاوی ] That is, O addressee! On that day you will see many criminals bound together in chains. Every kind of criminal will be chained with those like him. The criminals will be presented before Allah in the form of prisoners, bound in chains, and it can also mean that all criminals of the same kind will be gathered together and all will be linked by a single chain, as is understood from some other verses of the Quran.
