Consider not that Allâh is unaware of that which the Zâlimûn (polytheists, wrong-doers) do, but He gives them respite up to a Day when the eyes will stare in horror.

(Ayah42) ➊ Here, {وَلَاتَحْسَبَنَّاللّٰهَغَافِلًا …:’’ الظّٰلِمُوْنَ ‘‘} refers to the disbelievers and polytheists, and this is clearly evident from verse (44) of this surah, meaning if Allah is giving respite to these disbelievers, do not think that He is unaware of their deeds. ➋ { اِنَّمَايُؤَخِّرُهُمْ …: ’’ تَشْخَصُ ‘‘} is from the root {’’ مَنَعَ ‘‘}, the meaning of {’’شُخُوْصٌ‘‘} is for the eyes to remain open due to fear and anxiety, not moving.

42. 1. That is, because of the terrors of the Day of Judgment. If in this world Allah has given someone more respite and has not called him to account until his death, then on the Day of Judgment he will not be able to escape the divine reckoning, which will be such a dreadful day for the disbelievers that their eyes will remain wide open in terror.

42. (Believers)! Never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers [42] are doing. He is only giving them respite until the Day when eyes will stare in horror.
[42] A Scene of the Horrors of the Day of Judgment:
There are some wrongdoers whom Allah punishes even in this world, and as for the Hereafter, He will certainly punish them. And there are some who are not punished throughout their lives in this world and their rope is left long. This does not mean that Allah is unaware of their deeds; rather, there is a law with Allah for giving worldly and otherworldly punishment to criminals, which depends on the quantity and quality of the sins. Those criminals who are not punished in this world, their punishment is postponed until the Day of Judgment. The horror and terror of that day will be such that the criminals will not even be able to blink their eyes, and their eyes will continuously witness that scene and will not be able to close. In this state, with their heads raised and their gaze fixed ahead, they will be running towards the field of resurrection; they will not even be able to look down, and their hearts will be pounding with terror and their livers will be in their mouths. On that day, all people will be completely naked, and the terror will be such that no one will even think of looking at another. As is evident from the following hadith: Sayyidah Aisha ؓ says that the Prophet ﷺ said: "You will be raised barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised." I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will men and women not look at each other?" He said: "That time will be so severe that no one will even be conscious of such a thing."
