وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ يَفْرَحُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمِنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ مَن يُنكِرُ بَعْضَهُۥ ۚ قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ ٱللَّهَ وَلَآ أُشْرِكَ بِهِۦٓ ۚ إِلَيْهِ أَدْعُوا۟ وَإِلَيْهِ مَـَٔابِ ﴿36﴾
Those to whom We have given the Book (such as ‘Abdullâh bin Salâm and other Jews who embraced Islâm), rejoice at what has been revealed unto you (i.e. the Qur’ân), but there are among the Confederates (from the Jews and pagans) those who reject a part thereof. Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم): "I am commanded only to worship Allâh (Alone) and not to join partners with Him. To Him (Alone) I call and to Him is my return."
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those (to) whom
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ātaynāhumu We have given them
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ l-kitāba the Book
يَفْرَحُونَ yafraḥūna rejoice
بِمَآ bimā at what
أُنزِلَ unzila has been revealed
إِلَيْكَ ۖ ilayka to you
وَمِنَ wamina but among
ٱلْأَحْزَابِ l-aḥzābi the groups
مَن man (those) who
يُنكِرُ yunkiru deny
بَعْضَهُۥ ۚ baʿḍahu a part of it
قُلْ qul Say
إِنَّمَآ innamā Only
أُمِرْتُ umir'tu I have been commanded
أَنْ an that
أَعْبُدَ aʿbuda I worship
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
وَلَآ walā and not
أُشْرِكَ ush'rika I associate partners
بِهِۦٓ ۚ bihi with Him
إِلَيْهِ ilayhi To Him
أَدْعُوا۟ adʿū I call
وَإِلَيْهِ wa-ilayhi and to Him
مَـَٔابِ maābi (is) my return

(Ayah36) ➊ By {وَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰتَيْنٰهُمُ الْكِتٰبَ … : ’’ الْكِتٰبَ ‘‘} is meant either the previous books, i.e., the Torah and the Gospel. The meaning would be that since there are many evidences and glad tidings of your (Prophet Muhammad’s) truthfulness as a Messenger in the earlier scriptures, those who were given those books rejoice at the verses sent down to you. See Surah Al-Ankabut (47) and Al-Imran (113), because they have recognized you and have believed. However, many groups among them deny some things in the Qur’an, because it refutes those things which they had inserted from themselves, or had altered and distorted, such as the Jews declaring ‘Uzair (Ezra) and the Christians declaring the Messiah (‘Isa) as the son of Allah, and it reveals those things which they used to conceal, such as the punishment of stoning, the prohibition of usury, the attributes of the Prophet (Muhammad), etc. Therefore, despite recognizing (the truth), due to stubbornness, they deny these things and persist in their disbelief. See Surah At-Tawbah (30, 31). Or, { ’’ الْكِتٰبَ ‘‘ } may refer to the Qur’an itself, and “those who were given this Book” refers to the Muslims, that they rejoice at the verses sent down to you, and {’’الْأَحْزَابِ‘‘} refers to those ignorant and stubborn people of Arabia who did not accept some things in the Qur’an because they were contrary to their desires and did not become Muslims. Instead of rejoicing, these people become angry and enraged.

{قُلْ اِنَّمَاۤ اُمِرْتُ اَنْ اَعْبُدَ اللّٰهَ … :} So whoever does not accept, it is as if he denies Allah and His worship.

{ وَ اِلَيْهِ مَاٰبِ: ’’ مَاٰبِ ‘‘} This is a masdar mimi (verbal noun with the prefix “mim”) from {’’ اٰبَ يَؤُوْبُ ‘‘} (n, hollow verb with waw), the original was { ’’ مَاٰبِيْ ‘‘}, meaning “my return.” The “ya” has been omitted, and the kasrah is retained to indicate it.

36. 1. By this is meant the Muslims, and the meaning is those who act upon the commands of the Quran.
36. 2. That is, after seeing the proofs and evidences of the truthfulness of the Quran, they become even more pleased.
36. 3. By this is meant the Jews, Christians, disbelievers, and polytheists. According to some, "the Book" refers to the Torah and the Gospel; among them, those who became Muslims are pleased, and those who deny are the Jews and Christians who did not become Muslims.

36. And those to whom We gave the Book before rejoice [46] in what has been revealed to you, but among the groups are some who deny parts of it. Say, “I am only commanded to worship Allah [47] and not to associate anything with Him. To Him I call,

[46] That is, the Jews and Christians are pleased with this Book, i.e., the Quran, because it confirms their books and teaches respect and honor for their prophets. In this regard, all the People of the Book are pleased with the Quran. Then among them, there were some fair-minded people who accepted Islam, and the things they deny are those in which they had made alterations. Some rulings of the Book were concealed, and some things they themselves composed and attributed to Allah. The Quran unveiled all such matters and stated the reality in clear words. Because of this, those people denied some parts of the Quran, and later they denied the entire Quran.

The Literal and Interpretive Distortion by the People of the Book and Opening the Path to Shirk:

The matters in which the People of the Book made alterations, whether literal or interpretive, the worst among them was that they adopted the ways of shirk. The Jews declared Sayyiduna Uzair as the son of Allah. They also declared many things that Allah had made lawful as unlawful. The Christians, at first, divided divinity into three parts and said that Allah is the third of three. Later, they even gave Sayyidah Maryam the status of divinity, and all this was the result of literal or interpretive distortion in the Book of Allah. Then they insisted on the correctness of these beliefs, and the Christians of Najran even came to Madinah to debate with you. In response to such people, Allah commanded His Prophet to clearly say to them that I am absolutely not prepared to accept such things from you. I do not consider anyone to be a partner with Allah. I invite all of you to this very thing, and your prophets themselves also invited to this very thing.
