قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ يُوسُفُ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ يُوسُفُ وَهَـٰذَآ أَخِى ۖ قَدْ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ ﴿90﴾
They said: "Are you indeed Yûsuf (Joseph)?" He said: "I am Yûsuf (Joseph), and this is my brother (Benjamin). Allâh has indeed been gracious to us. Verily, he who fears Allâh with obedience to Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds), and is patient, then surely, Allâh makes not the reward of the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112) to be lost."
قَالُوٓا۟ qālū They said
أَءِنَّكَ a-innaka Are you indeed
لَأَنتَ la-anta surely you
يُوسُفُ ۖ yūsufu Yusuf
قَالَ qāla He said
أَنَا۠ anā I am
يُوسُفُ yūsufu Yusuf
وَهَـٰذَآ wahādhā and this
أَخِى ۖ akhī (is) my brother
قَدْ qad Indeed
مَنَّ manna Allah has been gracious
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah has been gracious
عَلَيْنَآ ۖ ʿalaynā to us
إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, he
مَن man who
يَتَّقِ yattaqi fears Allah
وَيَصْبِرْ wayaṣbir and (is) patient
فَإِنَّ fa-inna then indeed
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
لَا (does) not
يُضِيعُ yuḍīʿu let go waste
أَجْرَ ajra (the) reward
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ l-muḥ'sinīna (of) the good-doers

(Ayah90) ➊ { قَالُوْۤا ءَاِنَّكَ لَاَنْتَ يُوْسُفُ :} The brothers were shocked to hear that an incident from years ago, which no one but themselves knew, was known by someone in this foreign land. Then, reflecting on his features, they immediately concluded that this was indeed their wronged brother Yusuf. With a mixture of astonishment, wonder, and fear, they asked the question, which was made certain by three forms of emphasis: “Are you really, truly Yusuf?” {’’ اِنَّ ‘‘}, the lam of emphasis, and after {’’ اِنَّكَ ‘‘} then again with { ’’ أَنْتَ ‘‘} for emphasis. Despite so much certainty, the question still contains some doubt.

{ قَالَ اَنَا يُوْسُفُ وَ هٰذَاۤ اَخِيْ:} He said, “Yes, I am Yusuf, and this is my brother.” In this short statement, Yusuf (peace be upon him) recounted the entire story of what he had suffered at the hands of his brothers, which could not be fully expressed in words, and according to his forgiveness and forbearance, it was not the occasion for it.

{ قَدْ مَنَّ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْنَا:} That He saved both from hardship and united them, and raised them to this high rank which you are witnessing with your own eyes.

{ اِنَّهٗ مَنْ يَّتَّقِ وَ يَصْبِرْ :} That is, whoever avoids unlawful acts and disobedience, adheres to Allah’s commands, and is patient over the trials and Allah’s decree that befall him.

{فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُضِيْعُ اَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ :} Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: “Whoever is afflicted with hardship, does not go beyond the Shariah, and does not panic, then in the end, the reward is greater than the affliction (i.e., hardship).” (Mawdhih)

90. 1 When the brothers heard the mention of that Yusuf (علیہ السلام) from the mouth of the Aziz of Egypt, whom they had thrown into a dark well in Canaan during his childhood, they were both astonished and compelled to look closely to see whether the king speaking to them was in fact Yusuf (علیہ السلام) himself. Otherwise, how could he know the story of Yusuf (علیہ السلام)? Thus, they asked, "Are you Yusuf (علیہ السلام)?"

90. 2 In response to the question, along with acknowledgment and confession, mention was made of Allah's favor and the good results of patience and piety, explaining that you left no stone unturned in trying to destroy me. But it is the grace and favor of Allah that not only did He grant me deliverance from the well, but also bestowed upon me the rule of Egypt, and this is the result of the patience and piety to which Allah granted me the ability.

90. They exclaimed, “Are you indeed Joseph [87]?” He said, “I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, whoever fears Allah and is patient, then surely Allah does not let the reward of the good-doers go to waste.”

The Brothers Are Startled and Express Remorse:

At this question from the king of Egypt, they were suddenly startled—how did he come to know of these matters? Could it be that this king of Egypt is actually Yusuf (peace be upon him) himself? Then, to remove their astonishment and wonder, they asked the king of Egypt: "Are you indeed Yusuf (peace be upon him)?" The king of Egypt replied: "Yes, I am Yusuf, and the one whom I kept back last time is my younger brother Binyamin, who is now with me. See how Allah has shown mercy to us and reunited us two brothers after a long separation. He has replaced humiliation with honor, hardship with comfort, and difficulty with ease and tranquility. The brother whom you threw into the well—Allah Almighty has today granted him the rule over the entire land of Egypt. And Allah bestows His blessings in this way upon those who are patient and fear Him."
