"And ask (the people of) the town where we have been, and the caravan in which we returned; and indeed we are telling the truth."

(Ayah82){وَسْـَٔلِالْقَرْيَةَالَّتِيْكُنَّافِيْهَا … :} In this, they mentioned three things in their defense: (1) Ask the people of the town where we were. (2) Also, ask the caravan with which we came. (3) And (we swear that) indeed, we are surely telling the truth. The reason for presenting so many testimonies in their defense was that they knew their father would not believe their words.

82. 1. اَلْقَرْیَۃَ refers to Egypt, where they had gone to get grain. The meaning is the people of Egypt. Similarly, by والْعِیرَ is meant the companions of the caravan, that is, the people of the caravan. You may go to Egypt and ask the people of Egypt and those of the caravan who came with us, that what we are stating is true, there is no mixture of falsehood in it.

82. "And ask the people of the town where we stayed, and the caravan with which we came [79]. Surely, we are telling the truth."
[79] That is, if you do not trust us, then ask the people of Egypt or inquire from the members of the caravan who accompanied us. Through these testimonies, you will be convinced that what we are saying is indeed the truth. It should be noted that here the word "qaryah" is used in the sense of "ahl al-qaryah, i.e., the people of the town," and "al-'eer" is used in the sense of "the people of the caravan."
