And when they entered according to their father’s advice, it did not avail them in the least against (the Will of) Allâh; it was but a need of Ya‘qûb’s (Jacob) inner-self which he discharged. And verily, he was endowed with knowledge because We had taught him, but most men know not.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah68) ➊ {وَ لَمَّا دَخَلُوْا … : ’’ حَاجَةً ‘‘} "Desire" because man is in need of it.
{ وَ لٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ:} That is, most people do not know the reality of this divine secret (predestination) and remain proud of their own planning, or they understand trusting in Allah to mean that no planning should be done at all, as is the case or claim of most Sufis. The meaning is that if Yaqub (peace be upon him) advised his sons by understanding the correct concept of planning and trust in Allah, then in reality, it was the result of the teaching We gave him, that is, through revelation. Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him) writes: "Still, destiny came upon them, it was not averted, so those who have knowledge can have both certainty in destiny and precaution through means, and if an ignorant person has one, he cannot have the other." (Mawdhih)

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

68. 1. That is, Allah's decree could not have been averted by this precaution; however, what was in the heart of Hazrat Yaqub ؑ, (which was the fear of the evil eye), he said so in view of that. 68.2 That is, this measure was in the light of divine revelation, and this belief that precaution (a precautionary measure) cannot change destiny, was based on the knowledge taught by Allah, from which most people are deprived.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

68. And when they entered as their father had instructed them, it did not avail them against Allah's will [66] at all; it was only a desire in Jacob's soul which he satisfied. Surely, he was endowed with knowledge because of what We had taught him [67], but most people do not know.

[66] That is, the longing in the heart of Sayyiduna Yaqub ؑ was that all these brothers should go to Egypt safely and soundly, obtain grain there, and return safely and soundly. The precaution and trust of Sayyiduna Yaqub ؑ worked in this concern, so that they were not afflicted by the evil eye. But the longing of his heart was not fulfilled, because Allah had willed something else. Therefore, his precaution was of no avail against the divine decree of Allah, about which he could not even have imagined.

The Advice of Sayyiduna Yaqub to His Sons and the Decree of Allah:

The teaching that Allah Almighty gave to Sayyiduna Yaqub ؑ was that one should not rely solely on apparent means, but even after adopting apparent means, trust should be placed only in Allah. And this is the very teaching he was imparting to his sons. However, most people are unaware of this teaching; they either rely solely on apparent causes, or there are some who rely only on Allah and do not adopt apparent means or do not care for them. Both of these approaches are wrong and contrary to the teaching given by Allah.
