قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِى بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌ ﴿66﴾
He [Ya‘qûb (Jacob)] said: "I will not send him with you until you swear a solemn oath to me in Allâh’s Name, that you will bring him back to me unless you are yourselves surrounded (by enemies)," And when they had sworn their solemn oath, he said: "Allâh is the Witness to what we have said."
قَالَ qāla He said
لَنْ lan Never
أُرْسِلَهُۥ ur'silahu will I send him
مَعَكُمْ maʿakum with you
حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until
تُؤْتُونِ tu'tūni you give to me
مَوْثِقًۭا mawthiqan a promise
مِّنَ mina by
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
لَتَأْتُنَّنِى latatunnanī that surely you will bring him to me
بِهِۦٓ bihi that surely you will bring him to me
إِلَّآ illā unless
أَن an that
يُحَاطَ yuḥāṭa you are surrounded
بِكُمْ ۖ bikum you are surrounded
فَلَمَّآ falammā And when
ءَاتَوْهُ ātawhu they had given him
مَوْثِقَهُمْ mawthiqahum their promise
قَالَ qāla he said
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
عَلَىٰ ʿalā over
مَا what
نَقُولُ naqūlu we say
وَكِيلٌۭ wakīlun (is) a Guardian

(Ayah66){قَالَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى مَا نَقُوْلُ وَكِيْلٌ: ’’ وَكِيْلٌ ‘‘} with the pattern of { ’’فَعِيْلٌ‘‘} means maf'ool, that is, { ’’مَوْكُوْلٌ اِلَيْهِ‘‘ } to whom the work is entrusted. On one hand, Yaqub (peace be upon him) took a firm pledge, that is, oaths from his sons and gained complete assurance from apparent means, and on the other hand, he entrusted the matter to Allah and relied only on Him, that whatever we are saying, fulfilling it is only in His power, and whoever knowingly breaks the promise or commits treachery, He Himself will punish him. This is the true meaning of trust in Allah.

66. 1. That is, if a collective calamity befalls you or you are all destroyed or captured, from which you are not able to free yourselves, then it is a different matter. In this situation, you will be excused.

66. Jacob said, "I will never send him with you until you give me a firm pledge by Allah that you will surely bring him back to me, unless you are all surrounded (and prevented)." Then, when they had given him their firm pledge [64], Jacob said, "Allah is a Guarantor over what we say."

Upon Repeated Request, Sayyiduna Ya'qub's Conditional Acceptance:

Eventually, Sayyiduna Ya'qubؑ was compelled before his sons. He demanded from them a firm oath in the name of Allah, which they were already prepared to accept. Sayyiduna Ya'qubؑ further imposed the condition that they must protect Binyamin as long as there is life in them; however, if they themselves are surrounded somewhere and even protecting their own lives becomes difficult, then that is a different matter. The sons accepted this as well, so at that time Sayyiduna Ya'qubؑ said to them that whatever promise and commitment has been made among us, Allah is witness over it, and He alone is the One Who will bring it to a good and safe conclusion.
