Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 41) ➊ {يٰصَاحِبَيِ السِّجْنِ …:} Observe the beauty of expression of Yusuf (peace be upon him) while interpreting the dream: firstly, he did not specify which of the two the interpretation referred to, that this is the result of your dream and that is the result of yours, even though it was clear from the answer that the cupbearer would be reinstated to his position and the other would be crucified. Rather, he said, "For one of you, the interpretation is this, and for the other, it is that." Also, note that he first mentioned the interpretation that brought good news, and the other one later. The purpose was to delay the heartbreak as much as possible and to deliver the good news as soon as possible.

{قُضِيَ الْاَمْرُ الَّذِيْ فِيْهِ تَسْتَفْتِيٰنِ :} That is, this decision has been made, which can no longer be averted. Here, the word { ’’ قُضِيَ ‘‘} shows that the word {’’ ظَنَّ ‘‘} coming in the next verse is used here in the sense of certainty. Some have written that the interpretation of dreams was an ijtihadi assumption, therefore this assumption is in its original meaning. (Ibn Kathir, Ruh al-Ma'ani) It is stated in Mudih: {’’ ظَنَّ ‘‘} was used, which shows that the interpretation of dreams is not certainty but conjecture, but if a prophet makes a conjecture, then it is indeed certain, that is, it is not conjecture."

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

41. 1 After preaching monotheism, now Prophet Yusuf (علیہ السلام) is explaining the interpretations of the dreams they narrated.
41. 2 This is the same person who saw himself squeezing grapes in his dream; however, he did not specify which of the two it was so that the one destined to die would not be overcome with grief and sorrow beforehand.
41. 3 This is the person who saw bread on his head in his dream.
41. 4 That is, this matter is already decreed in divine destiny, and the interpretation I have given will inevitably come to pass. As mentioned in the hadith, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A dream, until it is interpreted, is on a bird's leg. When it is interpreted, it happens." (Musnad Ahmad, referenced by Ibn Kathir)

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

41. O my fellow prisoners! As for one of you, he will serve wine to his master; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter about which you inquired has been decreed [40].

Interpretation of Dreams:

In this way, taking advantage of the opportunity, Sayyiduna Yusuf ؑ explained the principles of religion to both of the questioners in a captivating manner, and then began to interpret their dreams. He said to the cupbearer that the interpretation of your dream is that you will be reinstated to your former position, and to the baker he said that you will be crucified, and after your death, birds will peck at and eat your flesh. That is, the accusation against the cupbearer has been proven false, and the baker has truly been declared guilty. Upon hearing this interpretation, the baker said that I did not have such a dream; I just wanted to ask the interpretation of such a dream in general. Sayyiduna Yusuf ؑ replied: Whether you had the dream or not, in any case, this decision has been decreed in destiny, and now this event will certainly take place.
