مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءً سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۚ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿40﴾
"You do not worship besides Him but only names which you have named (forged) - you and your fathers - for which Allâh has sent down no authority. The command (or the judgement) is for none but Allâh. He has commanded that you worship none but Him (i.e. His Monotheism); that is the (true) straight religion, but most men know not.

ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi [the] men

(Ayah 40){ مَا تَعْبُدُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖۤ اِلَّاۤ اَسْمَآءً …:} After bringing to their minds the thought of comparing one Lord with many lords, now in clear words the invalidity of many lords is stated: the deities you worship in reality do not even exist, they are merely imaginary and fanciful things, whose names you and your forefathers have invented. The command belongs to none but Allah, neither in terms of decree nor in terms of legislation, meaning that in the system of the universe, no one’s command runs except His, for example, that Allah commands the sun to move and someone else stops it, or He wants to kill someone and someone else prevents that person from dying; nor is anyone besides Him allowed to enforce their command in law and worship. His command is that you do not worship anyone except Him; this is the straight and firm and strong religion, but most people do not know, that is why they are entangled in the confusion of shirk. The truth is that this speech of Yusuf (peace be upon him) is the best brief representation of the religion of Ibrahim, that is, Islam.

40. 1. One meaning of this is that you yourselves have given these names to them as deities, whereas they are not deities, nor has Allah sent down any evidence regarding them. The second meaning is that the various names you have devised for these deities, for example, Khwaja Ghareeb Nawaz, Ganj Bakhsh, Karni Wala, Karman Wala, etc., all these are your own inventions. Allah has not sent down any evidence for them.

40. 2. This very religion, to which I am calling you, in which only Allah is worshipped, is correct and established, whose command Allah has given.

40. 3. Because of this, most people commit shirk (وَمَاوَمَا يُؤْمِنُ اَكْثَرُهُمْ باللّٰهِ اِلَّا وَهُمْ مُّشْرِكُوْنَ) 12. Yusuf:16) 'Most of them, even though they believe in Allah, are still polytheists.' And He said (وَمَآ اَكْثَرُ النَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِيْنَ) 12. Yusuf:13) O Prophet, despite your desire, most people are not going to believe in Allah.

Those you worship besides Allah are nothing but names you and your forefathers have named, for which Allah has sent down no authority [39]. The command belongs to none but Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the true religion, but most people do not know.

Shirk and Blind Following of Forefathers:

Moreover, these other masters or deities that are worshipped have no reality except that some individual invented such polytheistic beliefs and attributed them to a deity or shrine. Then these beliefs were passed down from generation to generation among their descendants, and blind devotion to elders clothed such beliefs in a religious guise. No one bothered to investigate whether there was any evidence for them in any revealed book or not. The majority of people are such that, without any investigation, they continue to associate such beliefs with these deities in blind imitation of their forefathers and offer vows and sacrifices in their names so that they might benefit them in some way. However, all these are matters of ignorance and unawareness. As for those who have taken charge of this business, they continue to receive offerings for free; therefore, they are never willing to abandon these polytheistic practices under any circumstances.
