Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). (Ayah 5) {فِيْجِيْدِهَاحَبْلٌمِّنْمَّسَدٍ: ’’جِيْدٌ‘‘} neck. {’’ مَسَدٍ ‘‘} a rope made of palm fiber or a rope made of the bark of the Gogul tree or a rope made of anything, or a well-twisted strong rope. An iron rope is also called {’’ مَسَدٍ ‘‘}, meaning she will enter Hell in such a state that there will be a strong twisted rope around her neck. In Sahih Bukhari, it is narrated from Mujahid that this refers to the chain that will be in the Fire, in which the criminals will be threaded, as He said: « ثُمَّفِيْسِلْسِلَةٍذَرْعُهَاسَبْعُوْنَذِرَاعًافَاسْلُكُوْهُ »[ الحآقۃ : ۳۲ ] "Then in a chain whose length is seventy cubits, insert him."

1. Jayed neck. Masad, a strong twisted rope. Whether it is made of munj or the bark of a date palm, or of iron wires. As various people have translated it, some have said that this is what she used to put on in the world, as has been described. But the more Sahih opinion seems to be that the collar that will be around her neck in Hell will be braided from iron wires. The comparison with masad is given to clarify its intensity and strength.

[5] The Death of Abu Lahab's Wife:
﴿جِيْد﴾ means a long and beautiful neck, a neck slender and long like that of a deer. She used to wear a gold necklace on this neck and would say that she would sell this necklace and spend it in opposition to Muhammad ﷺ. By Allah's will, the same thick, prickly rope of palm fiber with which she used to tie firewood got stuck around her neck and became so tightly entangled that it ultimately became the cause of her death.
