(Ayah 4,3) ➊ The conjunction of {سَيَصْلٰى نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ …: ’’ امْرَاَتُهٗ ‘‘} refers back to the pronoun in {’’ سَيَصْلٰى ‘‘} which returns to Abu Lahab, meaning he and his wife will enter the blazing fire. Abu Lahab’s wife, Umm Jamil, was named Arwa bint Harb bin Umayyah. She was a woman of high lineage among the Quraysh, the sister of Abu Sufyan bin Harb (may Allah be pleased with him), and the paternal aunt of Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and like her husband, she harbored intense enmity towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). { ’’ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ ‘‘ ’’ امْرَاَتُهٗ ‘‘} is a circumstantial qualifier, meaning his wife will enter the fire carrying firewood. The commentators have mentioned three meanings for this: first, that she will enter Hell carrying the burden of sins, which is the fuel for Hell; second, that she used to kindle the fire of enmity against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) among the people; and third, that she used to bring firewood on her back and scatter thorns in his path.
