[3] Indication Towards Your Passing Away:
This surah is the last complete surah to be revealed. [مسلم، كتاب التفسير] And it was revealed in the 10th year of Hijrah on the occasion of Hajjatul Wada’ in Mina. After this, a few separate verses were revealed, such as: ﴿الْيَوْمَاَكْمَلْتُلَكُمْدِيْنَكُمْ﴾[3:5] and so on, but no complete surah was revealed, and this verse too was revealed on the same occasion. From this surah, the Prophet ﷺ understood that the purpose of his prophethood had been fulfilled and that he ﷺ would soon depart from this world. Thus, on the occasion of Hajjatul Wada’ in the same year, in the grand sermon he ﷺ delivered, he clearly indicated this by saying: “Perhaps I will not be among you next year,” and the intelligent Companions also understood the same from this surah, as is clear from the following hadith: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما narrates that Sayyiduna Umar ؓ used to invite me (to his council) along with the senior Badri Companions. Some of the Companions رضي الله عنهم found this unpleasant and said: “You invite him with us while our sons are like him.” Sayyiduna Umar replied: “You know the reason for this.” So one day, Sayyiduna Umar ؓ invited me along with the senior Companions. I think that day he called me only to show them something. He asked them: “What do you understand from Allah’s statement: ﴿اِذَاجَاءَنَصْرُاللّٰهِوَالْفَتْحُ﴾?” Some people said: “It means that if we achieve victory, we should praise Allah and seek His forgiveness,” and some remained silent and did not answer. Then I was asked: “Do you also think the same?” I said: “No.” He said: “Then what do you say?” I said: “In this surah, there is an indication towards the passing away of the Prophet ﷺ, with which Allah informed His Messenger. Allah said: When Allah’s help came and Makkah was conquered, and this is the sign of your passing away. So now you ﷺ should praise Allah, seek His forgiveness, for He is Most Forgiving.” Sayyiduna Umar ؓ said: “I also understand from it what you are saying.” [بخاري، كتاب التفسير] In this verse, the Prophet ﷺ is instructed that, as gratitude for such great favors of his Lord, he should now glorify and praise Allah even more than before, and if there is any shortcoming left in his lifelong efforts, he should seek forgiveness from Allah for it. Thus, Sayyidah Aisha ؓ narrates that when Surah Nasr was revealed, after that the Prophet ﷺ would often recite this supplication in bowing and prostration: ﴿سُبْحٰنَكَاللّٰهُمَّرَبَّنَاوَبِحَمْدِكَاللّٰهُمَّاغْفِرْلِيْ﴾[بخاری، کتاب التفسیر۔ تفسیر سورۃ النصر]
