➋ { وَ نَادٰى نُوْحُ اِبْنَهٗ … :} See the compassion of the father, how lovingly he invites {’’يٰبُنَيَّ ‘‘} (O my little son! or O my dear son!) to board the ark.
➌ {وَ لَا تَكُنْ مَّعَ الْكٰفِرِيْنَ :} From this, it is understood that the cause of this son's destruction was the company of disbelievers and staying with them. If he had stayed in the company of Nuh (peace be upon him), he would not have fallen into the hands of the disbelievers. Even at the time of such a great flood, he drowned, but he did not consider it acceptable to come to Nuh (peace be upon him). Shaykh Sa'di writes:
The son of Nuh sat with the wicked,
He lost the family of prophethood.
"When the son of Nuh (peace be upon him) sat with the wicked, he lost the family of prophethood (he was no longer counted among the family of prophethood)."

42. 2. This was the fourth son of Hazrat Nuh (AS), whose title was Canaan and name was 'Yam'. Hazrat Nuh (AS) invited him to become a Muslim and not to be among those who would be drowned by remaining with the disbelievers.

The State of the Flood and Noah’s Advice to His Son:
The state of the flood was such that for six continuous months, springs on the earth kept gushing water and rain kept pouring from the sky. Until even hills and mountains were submerged in this water, the ark kept rising with the water and kept moving as Allah made it move. When the water was still rising and the water level was considerably above the ground, and the waves of water were rising like mountains and crashing into each other, an incident occurred during this time. Noah’s ؑ disbelieving son, Yam or Canaan, who was not boarded onto the ark, was standing by the side of a mountain, witnessing the horrors of the flood. When Noah ؑ saw him, paternal affection surged within him and he said, “Son! Believe and board this ark with us and leave the company of the disbelievers.”
