أَمْ يَقُولُونَ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ قُلْ إِنِ ٱفْتَرَيْتُهُۥ فَعَلَىَّ إِجْرَامِى وَأَنَا۠ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُجْرِمُونَ ﴿35﴾
Or they (the pagans of Makkah) say: "He (Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) has fabricated it (the Qur’ân)." Say: "If I have fabricated it, upon me be my crimes, but I am innocent of (all) those crimes which you commit."

(Ayah 35){ اَمْ يَقُوْلُوْنَ افْتَرٰىهُ قُلْ اِنِ افْتَرَيْتُهٗ …:} The commentators have given different explanations of this verse. Some have considered it to be related to the story of Noah (peace be upon him) and have regarded the address in it as being to Noah (peace be upon him), while others have considered it to be a parenthetical sentence within the story of Noah (peace be upon him) and, considering it to be the statement of the polytheists of Makkah, have regarded the address as being to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning: Do (the disbelievers of Makkah) say that he (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) has fabricated this (Qur’an) from his own heart? (O Muhammad!) Say: If I have fabricated it from my own heart, then the burden of my sin will fall upon me, and I am free from the responsibility of the sins you commit. Among the scholars of exegesis, Razi and, in agreement with him, Shawkani have preferred the first opinion and have written that this is the view of most commentators. Hafiz Ibn Kathir and the author of Al-Kashshaf have considered the second explanation to be more correct; this is also the opinion of Shah Abdul Qadir (may Allah have mercy on him). Both possibilities exist.

35. 1. According to some commentators, this conversation took place between the people of Noah and Prophet Noah (عليه السلام), while others believe that this sentence is an interjected statement referring to the conversation between the Prophet ﷺ and the polytheists of Makkah. The meaning is that if this Qur'an is fabricated by me and I am lying by attributing it to Allah, then it is my crime, and I alone will bear its punishment. But what you are doing, from which I am free, are you aware of that? Its consequences will not fall upon me, but upon you—are you at all concerned about that?

35. (O Prophet!) Do the disbelievers say: "He has fabricated this (Quran) himself"? [42] Say: "If I have fabricated it, then my sin is upon me, and I am free from the crimes you commit."

The Similarity Between the Disbelievers of Makkah and the People of Nuh:

In the previous verses, the circumstances of Nuh (peace be upon him) that have been described, and the responses and arguments his people used to present to him, were exactly the same as those faced by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the Quraysh of Makkah. Therefore, the Quraysh of Makkah developed the suspicion that these are our own circumstances and questions and answers being presented to us under the name of Nuh (peace be upon him). Thus, they also accused the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he himself is fabricating these things and presenting them before us, and in accordance with the saying "words come in the stories of others," this is actually a criticism directed at us. What should have happened was that the Quraysh of Makkah took a lesson from the incidents of Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him), but instead, their minds turned towards a negative aspect, and instead of reforming themselves, they leveled yet another accusation against you ﷺ. In response, Allah Almighty said that you should say to them: If, as you claim, I have fabricated this incident, then I alone am responsible for this crime. But what about the crimes you are committing? You will have to bear their consequences, not me.
