أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۖ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ أَلِيمٍ ﴿26﴾
"That you worship none but Allâh; surely, I fear for you the torment of a painful Day."

(Ayah 26){اَنْ لَّا تَعْبُدُوْۤا اِلَّا اللّٰهَ …:} This was the call of every messenger and this was the purpose of the sending of all of them. it says: «{ وَ مَاۤ اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا نُوْحِيْۤ اِلَيْهِ اَنَّهٗ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّاۤ اَنَا فَاعْبُدُوْنِ [ الأنبیاء : ۲۵ ] "And We did not send any messenger before you except that We revealed to him that there is no deity except Me, so worship Me." Instead of saying, "I fear for you a painful punishment," it says, "I fear for you the punishment of a painful day." This was said to instill more fear, that the punishment is so painful that the day it comes will itself be entirely full of pain, that is, extremely painful. The same thing was said by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in verse (3) of this surah.

26. 1. This is the same call to monotheism that every prophet brought to his own people. As stated (وَمَآ اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا نُوْحِيْٓ اِلَيْهِ اَنَّهٗ لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّآ اَنَا فَاعْبُدُوْنِ 25؀) 21. Al-Anbiya:25) "And We did not send any messenger before you except that We revealed to him that there is no deity except Me, so worship Me alone."

26. 2. That is, if you do not believe in me and do not accept this call to monotheism, then you will not be saved from the punishment of Allah.

"Worship none but Allah [32]. I truly fear for you the punishment of a painful [33] Day."

[32] The people of Noah ؑ were worshippers of the idols of their five deceased elders, namely Wadd, Suwa’, Yaghuth, Ya’uq, and Nasr. The details of this have already been mentioned earlier in Surah Al-A’raf. And this will also be mentioned in Surah Nuh.
[33] By “the grievous day” is meant both the Day of Resurrection and also the day when the flood of Noah occurred.
