By no means will they escape (from Allâh’s Torment) on earth, nor have they protectors besides Allâh! Their torment will be doubled! They could not bear to hear (the preachers of the truth) and they used not to see (the truth because of their severe aversion, in spite of the fact that they had the sense of hearing and sight).

(Ayah 20) ➊ { اُولٰٓىِٕكَلَمْيَكُوْنُوْامُعْجِزِيْنَ …:} That is, these people can never escape Allah or evade His grasp. Whenever He wishes to seize them, He will seize them even on this earth, and as for the Hereafter, that goes without saying. Then, besides Allah, there will never be anyone to help them who could save them from Allah’s punishment and grasp. ➋ { يُضٰعَفُلَهُمُالْعَذَابُ :} One is the punishment for their own misguidance, and the other is the punishment for leading others astray and preventing them from the path of Allah. See Surah Al-A'raf (37, 38) and Al-Ankabut (12, 13). ➌ { مَاكَانُوْايَسْتَطِيْعُوْنَ۠السَّمْعَوَمَاكَانُوْايُبْصِرُوْنَ :} That is, despite having ears and eyes, they neither listened to nor saw the truth. See Surah Al-A'raf (179). Another meaning is that they had so much enmity towards the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that they could neither bear to listen to him nor tolerate seeing him.

20. 1. That is, their aversion and hatred for the truth had reached such an extent that they did not even have the strength to hear or see it, or it means that Allah had given them ears and eyes but they neither heard anything with them nor saw anything. As if '(فَمَآاَغْنٰىعَنْهُمْسَمْعُهُمْوَلَآاَبْصَارُهُمْوَلَآاَفْــِٕدَتُهُمْمِّنْشَيْءٍ) 46. Al-Ahqaf:26) neither did their ears benefit them, nor their eyes and hearts,' because they remained deaf to hearing the truth and blind to seeing the truth, just as they will say when entering Hell '(لَوْكُنَّانَسْمَعُاَوْنَعْقِلُمَاكُنَّافِيْٓاَصْحٰبِالسَّعِيْرِ 10 ) 67. Al-Mulk:10) 'If we had listened and used our intellect, we would not be among the people of Hell today.'

20. They were not able to frustrate (Allah) on earth, nor did they have any protectors against Allah. The punishment will be doubled [24] for them. They were not able to hear (the truth), nor could they perceive [25].
[24] Why the Most Severe Punishment for Attributing Lies to Allah:
That is, if Allah had willed, He could have punished and destroyed them in this world itself, and these people could not have escaped Allah's grasp anywhere. And today, even on the Day of Resurrection, they will have no helper or supporter, and they will be given double punishment because, firstly, they themselves went astray, and secondly, they left this legacy of misguidance for their children and other followers, so that a proportional share of their punishment continues to be added to their account. [25] The second reason for the double punishment is that, firstly, they themselves never tried to seek the straight path, and secondly, if anyone tried to show them the straight path, they were not even willing to listen to him; rather, they would become intent on harming him.
