Hud · Meccan · Juz 12 · Page 222

So perchance you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) may give up a part of what is revealed unto you, and that your breast feels straitened for it because they say, "Why has not a treasure been sent down unto him, or an angel has come with him?" But you are only a warner. And Allâh is a Wakîl (Disposer of affairs, Trustee, Guardian) over all things.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 12) ➊ {فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكٌۢ بَعْضَ مَا يُوْحٰۤى اِلَيْكَ …:} The disbelievers were constantly making requests for some miracle to be brought, saying: Why has no treasure been sent down to you? Go ahead, turn Mount Uhud into gold, or bring an angel along with you. The mention of their strange and bizarre demands is given in some detail in Surah Bani Isra'il (90 to 93) and Surah Al-Furqan (7, 8). In these verses, you (ﷺ) are comforted that you should not become distressed or saddened by their doubts, demands, and taunts, but rather, whatever revelation comes to you for the condemnation of shirk and the affirmation of tawheed, you should continue to convey it to them without any omission or addition. Do not omit that part of the revelation which contains criticism of idols and condemnation of shirk.

{ اِنَّمَاۤ اَنْتَ نَذِيْرٌ :} That is, Allah Almighty has sent you only to warn of punishment, so without caring about the blame of any blamer, you should continue to fulfill this duty.

{وَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَّكِيْلٌ : } That is, to fulfill or not fulfill their demands is Allah's work; everything is under His control. If He wills, He can give you not just one treasure, but all the treasures of the earth, and not just one angel, but send down hundreds of angels upon you. In any case, whatever His wisdom and expediency dictate, He will do accordingly; what concern do you have with these things? He Himself is the guardian of everything. You should continue to boldly convey to them whatever command comes from Allah Almighty.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

12. 1. The polytheists kept saying about the Prophet that why does not an angel descend with him, or why is not a treasure sent down to him? In another place it is said, "We know that your breast is straitened by what they say about you." (Surah Al-Hijr). In this verse, it is being said in reference to these same things that perhaps your breast becomes straitened and some things which are revealed to you and are burdensome for the polytheists, it is possible that you may not like to convey them to them. Your duty is only warning and preaching; these must be done by you in every situation.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

12. (O Prophet,) do not let it be that you leave out any part of what is revealed to you, and do not let your heart feel distressed [15] because they say, "Why has no treasure been sent down to him, or why has no angel come with him?" You are only a warner, and Allah is the Disposer of all things.

[15] You ﷺ neither insulted nor spoke ill of the deities of the Quraysh of Makkah; rather, you would only say that these deities of yours can neither harm nor benefit anyone, and it was this very statement that would provoke the polytheists, because they considered this to be an insult not only to their deities but also to themselves and their forefathers. They had no reasonable answer to this, so instead, they would mock the verses of Allah, deny them, or raise objections and make demands. It is possible that as a result of their continuous such behavior, the thought may have arisen in your heart as to what benefit there is in reciting such verses to them when, instead of believing, they become even more hostile and start making sarcastic remarks. Allah Almighty, comforting you ﷺ, said that you should not be saddened or distressed by these things; whatever revelation is being sent down to you, you should recite it to them. That is your only responsibility, and as for what they are doing, Allah Himself will deal with them.

The Demands for Miracles by the Quraysh:

Among the objections or demands of the Quraysh of Makkah was also this: if you are truly the Messenger of Allah, then some treasure should be sent down to you from Allah, which would improve your financial situation, and with the strength of this material power, you could win people over to your side; or at least an angel should be present with you, through which you would gain spiritual strength, and people would also become certain of your prophethood and believe in you. When none of these things are available to you, how can we believe in you? Do not be disheartened by these words of the disbelievers, because showing miracles is not your responsibility. Your responsibility is only to convey the message of Allah to these people and to warn them of their evil end. As for miracles, showing miracles is the work of Allah, Who is the Owner and Controller of everything.
