But if We let him taste good (favour) after evil (poverty and harm) has touched him, he is sure to say: "Ills have departed from me." Surely, he is exultant, and boastful (ungrateful to Allâh).

(Ayah 10) {وَلَىِٕنْاَذَقْنٰهُنَعْمَآءَبَعْدَضَرَّآءَ …: ’’ نَعْمَآءَ ‘‘} A blessing whose effect is apparent on the one who receives it. Similarly, {’’ ضَرَّآءَ ‘‘} is a calamity whose adverse effect becomes apparent on a person. (Tantawi) {’’ اِنَّهٗلَفَرِحٌفَخُوْرٌ ‘‘} That is, he becomes very exultant and boastful and thinks that now all hardships and difficulties have been removed.

10. 1. That is, he thinks that the period of hardships has passed, and now no difficulty will come to him. Different meanings of "Ummah": In verse number 8, the word "Ummah" has appeared. In the Quran, it is used in different places with different meanings. It is derived from "Umm," which means intention. Here, its meaning is the time and period intended for the descent of punishment. (Fath al-Qadeer) In Surah Yusuf, verse 45 (وَادْكُرْبَعْدَأُمَّةٍ), it has the same meaning. Apart from this, the meanings in which it is used include: a leader or guide, as in (إِنَّإِبْرَاهِيمَكَانَأُمَّةً); creed and religion, as in (إِنَّاوَجَدْنَاآبَاءَنَاعَلَىأُمَّةٍ); group and party, as in (وَلَمَّاوَرَدَمَاءَمَدْيَنَوَجَدَعَلَيْهِأُمَّةًمِّنَالنَّاسِ) and (وَمِنقَوْمِمُوسَىٰأُمَّةٌ) and others. It is that specific group or nation to whom a messenger is sent. (وَلِكُلِّأُمَّةٍرَّسُولٌ) This is also called "Ummah Da'wah," and similarly, those who believe in the Prophet are also called "Ummah" or "Ummah Ittiba'" or "Ummah Ijabah." (Ibn Kathir)
10. 2. That is, he boasts about what he has and expresses pride and arrogance over others. However, the people of faith and those who do righteous deeds are exempt from these blameworthy qualities, as is clear from the next verse.

10. And if, after adversity has touched someone, We grant him blessings, he says, "My troubles have left me," and then he becomes boastful and arrogant [13].
[13] The Narrow-mindedness and Ingratitude of Man:
In this verse and the previous one, the picture is drawn of a worldly and God-forgetting person’s lack of endurance and narrow-mindedness, which is that if Allah’s blessings are available throughout life and then at some point a calamity befalls, he immediately starts lamenting over the calamity and begins to utter harsh words about Allah, completely forgetting how long Allah had kept him in comfort, for which he never even expressed gratitude. And if We deliver him from the calamity, even then he does not thank Allah; rather, at that time too, he becomes heedless of Allah and arrogant, boasting and swelling with pride as if no calamity will ever befall him again. Whereas he should have not forgotten his previous state, expressed gratitude to Allah, and humbled himself before His favors.
