Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

The tafsir of this verse may be read with the following verses.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. 5. 1. By this are meant those people who either do not pray at all, or used to pray before but then became lazy, or do not pray at its prescribed time. They pray whenever they wish, or make a habit of delaying the prayer, or do not pray with humility and submission. All these meanings are included in this, therefore one should avoid all the aforementioned shortcomings in prayer. The mention of this at this place also makes it clear that those who are guilty of these shortcomings in prayer are the very people who do not believe in the reward and reckoning of the Hereafter. That is why one of the attributes of the hypocrites has also been mentioned: (وَاِذَا قَامُوْٓا اِلَى الصَّلٰوةِ قَامُوْا كُسَالٰى ۙ يُرَاۗءُوْنَ النَّاسَ وَلَا يَذْكُرُوْنَ اللّٰهَ اِلَّا قَلِيْلًا 142؁ۡۙ) 4. An-Nisa:142)

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

5. Who are heedless of their prayers [4].

[4] From verses 4 and 5 of this surah, it is understood that this surah is Madinan, because in these verses the characteristics of the hypocrites' prayer are described. There was no existence of hypocrites during the Makkan period; this group only came into existence during the Madinan period when the Muslim state had been established. Being heedless of prayer means sometimes performing it, sometimes not, sometimes offering it at an improper time when the time is almost over, hastily pecking a few movements, performing the prayer merely as a habit or exercise, but not remembering Allah even for a moment, remaining absorbed in worldly thoughts. In short, there are countless forms of heedlessness regarding prayer, all of which fall under this category.
