So if you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) are in doubt concerning that which We have revealed unto you, [i.e. that your name is written in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)], then ask those who are reading the Book [the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] before you. Verily, the truth has come to you from your Lord. So be not of those who doubt (it).

(Ayah 94) {فَاِنْكُنْتَفِيْشَكٍّمِّمَّاۤاَنْزَلْنَاۤاِلَيْكَ …:} The main subject of this Surah is the proof of the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the refutation of the doubts of the opponents. Here, at the end of the Surah, attention is again directed to the main subject. Since the polytheists of Arabia were unlettered and devoid of knowledge of the heavenly books, they were told that if you have any doubt and do not have knowledge yourself, then ask those Jewish scholars who possess the heavenly knowledge of the Torah and so on. Among them, those who are fair-minded and fear Allah will acknowledge that the Qur’an is indeed a heavenly book and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the true Messenger of Allah, because in their books, there are glad tidings about you (peace be upon him) in many places and your signs have been described. In short! This address is to you (peace be upon him), but the purpose is to draw the attention of the polytheists of Arabia, otherwise, the question of you having any doubt about your Prophethood does not arise at all. It should also be kept in mind that sometimes a statement is made as a supposition or assumption; it does not mean that it is actually so, i.e., if we suppose that you have any doubt, then ask the People of the Book, in their books your clear mention is present, so what doubt remains? This is just like when Allah, the Exalted, will ask Isa (peace be upon him): Did you say to the people to take me and my mother as gods? So, in his detailed statement, he will also say: «{ اِنْكُنْتُقُلْتُهٗفَقَدْعَلِمْتَهٗ }»[ المائدۃ : ۱۱۶ ] That is, suppose I had said this, then O Allah! It could not have been hidden from You. The meaning is clear that I never said this. Similarly, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) neither had any doubt nor did he need to ask any People of the Book. Another explanation is that here in {’’ كُنْتَفِيْشَكٍّ ‘‘} every human being is addressed directly, because this book has been revealed for the guidance of everyone.

94. 1. This address is either to the general people or, through the Prophet, the Ummah is being taught. Because the Prophet could not have any doubt about the revelation. The meaning of "ask those who read the Book" is that the heavenly books before the Quran (such as the Torah and the Gospel, etc.), that is, those who have these books, ask them about this Quran because its signs and the attributes of the last Prophet have been mentioned in them.

94. Then if you are in doubt about what We have revealed to you of this Book [104], ask those who have been reading the Book (the Torah) before you. Surely, the truth has come to you from your Lord, so do not be among those who doubt.
[104] The Remedy for Doubt is to Inquire from the People of Knowledge:
Apparently, this address is directed towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but in reality, it is meant for other people, and this address is merely for further emphasis. The reason is that every prophet is the first to believe in the divinely revealed revelation, and then he invites others, and doubt and faith are two completely opposite things. How could you ﷺ possibly doubt that which you are inviting the entire world to, and instilling in the hearts of the listeners a conviction stronger than mountains? Now, if anyone develops doubt regarding the revelation sent down by Allah, whether it is truly from Allah or not, the remedy is not that he should remain in doubt, but rather that he should ask those upon whom previous heavenly books were revealed and who also read those books, i.e., the Jews and Christians, and thus remove his doubt. Although the majority of Jews and Christians did not believe in you, there were some just people among them, some of whom accepted faith, and some did not accept it for other reasons. Then, since in principle the teachings of all heavenly books are similar, even among the People of the Book, just people would testify that this is indeed a heavenly book. And the practical proof that neither you nor the Companions had any doubt is that neither you nor the Companions ever asked the People of the Book about this matter.
