Whether We show you (in your lifetime, O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) some of what We promise them (the torment), or We cause you to die - still unto Us is their return, and moreover, Allâh is Witness over what they used to do.

(Ayah 46) ➊ {وَاِمَّانُرِيَنَّكَبَعْضَالَّذِيْنَعِدُهُمْ … :} means the dominance of Islam and the humiliation and disgrace of the opponents, that is, the promises of killing, captivity, and defeat that We continue to make to these disbelievers from time to time—if We fulfill some of them in your lifetime and show them to you, or if We take you away before fulfilling some of them, in both cases they have to return to Us. Then Allah is a perfect witness over what these people are doing. There He will show you their end. The meaning of {’’ شَاهِدٌ ‘‘} is witness, and in {’’ شَهِيْدٌ ‘‘} there is emphasis. ➋ Allah fulfilled some of these promises in your lifetime, for example, the imposition of famine, hunger, and fear upon the people of Makkah. See An-Nahl (112). Because of this famine, they were forced to eat even bones, and they saw smoke everywhere between the earth and the sky. See Ad-Dukhan (10, 11). Until at that time, the leader of the disbelievers, Abu Sufyan, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and requested for rain in these words: [أَيْمُحَمَّدُإِنَّقَوْمَكَقَدْهَلَكُوْا،فَادْعُاللّٰهَأَنْيَّكْشِفَعَنْهُمْ،فَدَعَا ][ بخاری، التفسیر، باب « ثم تولوا …» : ۴۸۲۴ ] "O Muhammad! Surely your people have perished, so pray to Allah to remove (this calamity) from them." So you prayed. Then (the battles of) Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, Hudaybiyyah, and finally the conquest of Makkah and Khaybar, and the entire Arabian Peninsula embracing Islam in your lifetime. Allah showed you all this in your lifetime, and some promises were fulfilled after your passing in the time of the Caliphs. In any case, there remained no doubt about your truthfulness. It is stated in "Mawduh al-Qur'an": "Some of the dominance of Islam happened before you (the Prophet, peace be upon him), and the rest through your Caliphs." Perhaps in {’’اَوْنَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ‘‘} there is an indication towards the second period.

46. 1. In this verse, Allah Almighty is saying that regarding these disbelievers, about whom We are making a promise, if they persist in disbelief and polytheism, then the divine punishment can also befall them, just as it befell the previous nations. Some of it, if We send it during your lifetime, that is also possible, which would bring coolness to your eyes. But if you are taken from this world before that, even then it does not matter; ultimately, these disbelievers have to return to Us. We are fully aware of all their deeds and conditions; how will they be able to escape Our punishment there? The very purpose of the occurrence of the Day of Judgment is that there, the obedient ones are rewarded for their obedience and the disobedient ones are punished for their disobedience.

46. And whether We show you (O Prophet) some of what We have promised them of punishment, or We cause you to die (before that), to Us is their return [63], and Allah is Witness over what they do.
[62] How Was the Prophecy of Punishment for the Disbelievers Fulfilled?
For the disbelievers and polytheists, the greatest pain and punishment could only be the dominance of Islam and their humiliating defeat. Thus, a major part of this punishment was witnessed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself, as well as by all Muslims and disbelievers, during his lifetime. Islam continued to advance and rapidly achieved stages of progress, and from the Battle of Badr to the Battle of Tabuk, the disbelievers faced nothing but defeat and humiliation both on the battlefield and socially. Whatever remained, Allah Almighty completed after your passing, and up to the era of Uthman, there came a time when the banner of Islam was raised in nearly the entire world, and disbelief was completely subdued and overpowered.
[63] Furthermore, the promise of punishment for the disbelievers was not limited only to the life of this world, but the promise of punishment in the Hereafter was permanently present. It is not possible that if they have faced punishment in this world, they will be spared in the Hereafter. In other words, if any disbeliever escapes punishment in the life of this world, then the punishment of the Hereafter is, in any case, certain and much more severe.
