Mankind were but one community (i.e. on one religion - Islâmic Monotheism), then they differed (later); and had not it been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord, it would have been settled between them regarding what they differed.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 19) ➊ { وَ مَا كَانَ النَّاسُ اِلَّاۤ اُمَّةً وَّاحِدَةً فَاخْتَلَفُوْا :} Contrary to the atheist philosophers and historians of this age, the Quran repeatedly proclaims that the origin of humanity was not in disbelief or polytheism, but in pure monotheism. In the beginning, all humans followed one religion, that is, Islam, and they belonged to one community, but gradually they deviated from this religion and, following their desires, differed among themselves and invented religions and laws of their own choosing. See Surah Al-Baqarah (2:213).
{وَ لَوْ لَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ …:} That is, if Allah Almighty had not already decided that people in the world would be given respite, so that they could use their intellect and understanding to choose whichever path they wished and abandon whichever path they wished, and that they would be rewarded or punished for their good or bad deeds only on the Day of Resurrection, then Allah Almighty would have long ago exposed the truth and seized those who left the path of faith and walked the path of disbelief and polytheism. (Ibn Kathir, Qurtubi)

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. This tafsir explains the meanings of the Quran in accordance with the methodology of the Salaf (early righteous generations), relying on authentic sources and straightforward language. Due to its reliability and adherence to sound Islamic scholarship, the Saudi government publishes and distributes this tafsir among the Hujjaj (pilgrims) visiting the Haramain. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

19. 1. That is, this polytheism is an invention of the people themselves; otherwise, in the beginning, it had no existence. All people were upon one religion and one way, and that is Islam, in which monotheism holds fundamental importance. Until Prophet Nuh (Noah) (AS), people remained firm upon this monotheism, then differences arose among them, and some people began to consider others besides Allah as deities, fulfillers of needs, and removers of difficulties.

19. 2. That is, if Allah had not decreed that He does not punish anyone before completing the argument, and in this way, had He not appointed a time for the creation, then surely He would have decided their disputes and would have granted happiness to the believers and subjected the disbelievers to punishment.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

19. Mankind was [once] a single community, then they differed among themselves [30]. And had it not been for a word that had already gone forth from your Lord [31], the matter in which they differed would have been settled between them.

[30] That is, after Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him), for a long time people remained upon one religion, then they differed and became sects. Some of them, after accepting the influence of celestial bodies on human life, became their worshippers, and some people made idols of their elders and began to worship them. Thus, leaving the straight path of monotheism, they set out upon the ways of polytheism.

What is the Preordained Word?

That preordained matter was that since this world is a place of action and a place of trial, therefore, no one will be punished immediately for his crime. If this matter had not already been in the Divine Will, then whenever some people formed a new sect, Allah's punishment would have immediately destroyed them, and thus this world would have ended long ago. And if some people had survived and they had brought faith, then such compelled faith would have been of no benefit.
