وَٱتَّبِعْ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ وَٱصْبِرْ حَتَّىٰ يَحْكُمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ ﴿109﴾

And (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), follow the revelation sent unto you, and be patient till Allâh gives judgement. And He is the Best of judges.

وَٱتَّبِعْ wa-ittabiʿ And follow

يَحْكُمَ yaḥkuma Allah gives judgment
ٱللَّهُ ۚ l-lahu Allah gives judgment
وَهُوَ wahuwa And He
خَيْرُ khayru (is) the Best
ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ l-ḥākimīna (of) the Judges

(Ayah 109){وَ اتَّبِعْ مَا يُوْحٰۤى اِلَيْكَ …: } That is, follow what is revealed to you, act upon it yourself, and invite all people to it as well. Then, be patient over the immense difficulties and trials that result from this, until Allah decides between you and your enemies as to who will remain dominant in the world. And He is the best of all who decide, and He has mentioned this decision in several places in the Qur’an. Thus, He said: «{ هُوَ الَّذِيْۤ اَرْسَلَ رَسُوْلَهٗ بِالْهُدٰى وَ دِيْنِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهٗ عَلَى الدِّيْنِ كُلِّهٖ وَ لَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُوْنَ }» [ الصف : ۹ ] “He it is Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth so that He may make it prevail over every religion, even though the polytheists may dislike it.” And He said: «{ وَ لَا تَهِنُوْا وَ لَا تَحْزَنُوْا وَ اَنْتُمُ الْاَعْلَوْنَ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُّؤْمِنِيْنَ }» [ آل عمران : ۱۳۹ ] “And do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are believers.” Now, if Muslims are subdued, it is obligatory for them to reflect on Allah’s condition, “if you are believers,” and become true believers, so that the decision of the Best of Judges may be in their favor.

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan — Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf

Tafsir Ahsan al-Bayan is a well-known Quran commentary by Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. 19. 1 Hold firmly to whatever Allah ﷻ reveals, act upon whatever He commands, refrain from whatever He forbids, and do not show any negligence in anything. And endure with patience whatever hardships come in obeying and following the revelation, whatever harm comes from the opponents, and whatever difficulties have to be faced in the path of preaching and inviting—face all of them with steadfastness and perseverance.

19. 2 Because His knowledge is perfect, His power and might are vast, and His mercy is all-encompassing—so who can be a better judge than Him?

109. Follow what has been revealed to you, and be patient until Allah gives His judgment [117], for He is the best of judges.

[117] This Surah was revealed in the last period of the Makkan life, when the hardships and persecutions of the disbelievers against the Muslims had reached their peak, and despite the desire of some courageous Companions, the Muslims had not yet been granted permission for Jihad. Therefore, at the end of this Surah, once again, you and the Muslims are being instructed to endure everything with patience for now and to follow the revelation, and at the same time, they are being given the glad tidings of the coming of better days.
