Do You Have to Repeat Tawāf if Wudhu Breaks Midway?

Assalamu Alaikum,

During Umrah, if a person starts Tawāf with Wudhu but their Wudhu breaks in the middle of the rounds, what is the correct ruling?
  • Should they stop immediately and renew Wudhu before continuing?
  • Do they need to restart the entire Tawāf, or can they resume from where they left off?
I’ve heard different opinions from people and would appreciate guidance from those who know the correct fiqh rulings.

Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

The majority of scholars consider Wudhu to be a condition for the validity of Tawāf, just like Ṣalāh.

If Wudhu breaks during Tawāf
  • You must stop immediately and leave to perform Wudhu.
  • After renewing Wudhu, you resume Tawāf from the beginning of the round where Wudhu broke.
    • Example: If you were in your 3rd round and Wudhu broke halfway, after renewing Wudhu you restart the 3rd round, not the whole Tawāf.
  • You do not need to restart all 7 rounds unless you had invalid Wudhu from the beginning without knowing.

Ibn ʿAbbās (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:


“Tawāf around the House is like prayer, except that Allah has permitted speech in it. So whoever speaks during it, let him only speak good.”
