باب مَا جَاءَ فِي بَيْعَةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Hadith 1591
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْأُمَوِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى : لَقَدْ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ سورة الفتح آية 18 ، قَالَ جَابِرٌ" بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى أَنْ لَا نَفِرَّ ، وَلَمْ نُبَايِعْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ " ، قَالَ : وَفِي الْبَاب ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ ، وَابْنِ عُمَرَ ، وَعُبَادَةَ ، وَجَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : وَلَمْ يُذْكَرْ فِيهِ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ .
‘From Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both)’ regarding the noble verse: «لقد رضي الله عن المؤمنين إذ يبايعونك تحت الشجرة» “Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave their pledge to you under the tree.” (Al-Fath: 18), it is narrated that Jabir said: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) not to flee, and we did not pledge allegiance to him upon death. © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- This hadith is narrated with the chain «عيسى بن يونس عن الأوزاعي عن يحيى بن أبي كثير عن جابر بن عبد الله», in which the intermediary of Abu Salamah between Yahya bin Abi Kathir and Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) is not mentioned,
2- In this chapter, hadiths have also been narrated from Salamah bin Al-Akwa’, Ibn Umar, Ubadah, and Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them all).
1- This hadith is narrated with the chain «عيسى بن يونس عن الأوزاعي عن يحيى بن أبي كثير عن جابر بن عبد الله», in which the intermediary of Abu Salamah between Yahya bin Abi Kathir and Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) is not mentioned,
2- In this chapter, hadiths have also been narrated from Salamah bin Al-Akwa’, Ibn Umar, Ubadah, and Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them all).
Hadith 1592
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِسَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ : " عَلَى أَيِّ شَيْءٍ بَايَعْتُمْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ ؟ قَالَ : عَلَى الْمَوْتِ " ، وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ .
Yazid bin Abi Ubaidullah says: I asked Salamah bin Al-Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him): On the day of Hudaybiyyah, what did you people pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for? He said: For death. 1© Imam Tirmidhi says: This hadith is hasan sahih.
Hadith 1593
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ : كُنَّا نُبَايِعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ ، فَيَقُولُ لَنَا : " فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ كِلَاهُمَا .
'Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) says that we used to pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to listen and obey (that is, to listen to your command and obey you), then he would say to us: "As much as you are able." © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- This hadith is Hasan Sahih,
2- The meaning of the hadith of Jabir and the hadith of Salamah bin Al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with them both) is correct (there is no contradiction in them). Some companions pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) unto death; they said: We will continue to fight before you until we are killed, and other people, when pledging allegiance to you, said: We will not flee.

Hadith 1594
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ : " لَمْ نُبَايِعْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ ، إِنَّمَا بَايَعْنَاهُ عَلَى أَنْ لَا نَفِرَّ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ، وَمَعْنَى كِلَا الْحَدِيثَيْنِ صَحِيحٌ : قَدْ بَايَعَهُ قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ ، وَإِنَّمَا قَالُوا : لَا نَزَالُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ حَتَّى نُقْتَلَ ، وَبَايَعَهُ آخَرُونَ ، فَقَالُوا : لَا نَفِرُّ .
Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We did not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) for death; rather, we pledged allegiance to you that we would not flee (even if its outcome would eventually be death).
