Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Commentary: 1؎ :
The tenth day is called "Hajj Akbar" (the greater Hajj) because most of the rites of Hajj are performed on this day,
such as the stoning of Jamrat al-Aqabah (throwing pebbles),
halq (shaving the head),
sacrifice,
Tawaf al-Ziyarah and other acts of Hajj.
As for the common belief among the masses that "Hajj Akbar" refers to the Hajj in which the tenth day coincides with Friday,
there is no basis for this.
As for the narration of Talhah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Karz: "The best of days is the Day of Arafah, and if it coincides with Friday, it is better than seventy pilgrimages on other than Friday," this is mursal,
and its chain is also unknown.
And by "Hajj Asghar" (the lesser Hajj), the majority mean 'umrah, and there is also a view that Hajj Asghar is the Day of Arafah and Hajj Akbar is the Day of Nahr (sacrifice). 2؎ :
That is, in the narration of Shu'bah, there is the addition of the intermediary of 'Abdullah ibn Murrah between Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i and al-Harith, whereas in the narrations of other huffaz (memorizers), this is not the case.
