´Salamah bin Al-Akwa said:` "When the following was revealed: 'And for those upon whom it is difficult, (they may) feed a poor person' - if one of us wanted we would not fast, and pay the ransom, until the Ayah after it was revealed abrogating it."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
English Commentary:
1:
The subsequent verse referred to is the noble verse: ﴿فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ﴾ [البقرة: 185].
2:
This hadith is an explicit proof that the noble verse ﴿وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ﴾ is abrogated.
This is the view of the majority, and it is the truth.
However, Ibn Abbas's opinion is that this verse is definitive (muhkam) and its ruling is specific to those elderly individuals who experience hardship and difficulty in fasting.
