´Aishah narrated:` "Hafsah and I were both fasting when we were presented some food that we really wanted, so we ate from it. The Messenger of Allah came, and Hafsah beat me to him - she was the daughter of her father - and she said: 'O Messenger of Allah! We were both fasting when we were presented with some food that we wanted, so we ate from it.' He said: 'Make up another day in its place.'"

English Commentary:
1:
However, the majority have interpreted this as being a matter of choice, because in one narration from Umm Hani it is stated: ((Wa in kana tatawwu'an fa in shi'ti faqdi wa in shi'ti fala taqdi)) “And if it is a voluntary (nafl) fast, then if you wish, make it up, and if you wish, do not make it up.” This narration has been recorded by Ahmad, and Abu Dawud has also narrated a hadith with the same meaning.
Note:
(Ja‘far ibn Burqan is weak in narration from al-Zuhri,
and moreover, the correct view is that the intermediary of ‘Urwah is incorrect—‘Urwah is not present in the chain at all.)

Benefits and Issues:
Making up a missed voluntary fast is not obligatory; if one does so, it is recommended (mustahabb).
However, one should not make a habit of this practice.
The aforementioned narration is weak.
