´Sa'd bin Ishaq bin Ka'b bin Ujrah narrated from his father from his grandfather who said:` "The Prophet prayed Maghrib in the Masjid of Banu Abdul-Ashbal, and some people stood to offer voluntary prayers, so the Prophet said: 'This Salat is to be performed by you in your homes.'"

1:
According to the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), in general, it is more virtuous to perform the Sunnah and Nafl (supererogatory) prayers at home. However, it is permissible to perform them in the mosque. In this era, it is actually better to perform them in the mosque because in most homes there is no arrangement for prayer; when a person reaches home, he is confronted with certain issues and ends up forgetting the prayer, and so on. Therefore, it is better to perform them in the mosque than not to perform them at all. However, if someone has full ability over himself, then he should certainly perform them at home.

1601. Commentary: This "prayer" refers to the Sunnah prayers of Maghrib or, generally, to Sunnah and supererogatory (nafl) prayers. This instruction is for recommendation (istihbab), not obligation (wujub), because it is established from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself that he performed supererogatory prayers (nawafil) in the mosque after Maghrib. See: (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Tatawwu’, Hadith: 1301). Nowadays, life has become so fast-paced and busy that there is a risk of missing the Sunnah prayers after the obligatory ones, which is a reprehensible matter. If this is the case, then the regular Sunnah prayers (sunan rawatib) should be performed in the mosque immediately after the obligatory prayer.
