Hadith 587

´Ibn Abbas narrated:` "The Messenger of Allah would glance toward the right and the left during Salat but he would not turn his neck to look behind him."

Urdu Footnote:
1:
This contradiction is mentioned ahead,
and the contradiction is that Waki‘, in his chain of narration, has said "‘an ba‘d ashab ‘Ikrimah" (from some companions of ‘Ikrimah),
meaning that two narrators are omitted in the chain.

1202. Commentary: Here, what is meant is looking out of the corner of the eye, by which the face does not turn away from the direction of the qiblah. If what is meant is turning the face to look, then this pertains to an earlier period; now it is not permitted because it is contrary to «الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ» [المؤمنون : 2 : 23]. Turning the face causes the neck to turn, which is not permissible. Out of necessity, looking out of the corner of the eye can occur in both obligatory (fard) prayers and supererogatory (nafl) prayers.
