´Umar bin Al-Khattab narrated that :` Allah's Messenger said: 'Whoever performs Wudu, making Wudu well, then says: (Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan-abduhu wa rasuluhu, Allahummajalni minat tawwabin, waj'alni minal mutatahhirin) 'I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, there are no partners for Him. And I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves.' Then eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, that may enter by whichever of them wishes."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Commentary:
1:
Imam Muslim has narrated this hadith of Umar radi Allahu anhu in his Sahih through another chain (Number: 234), and in that narration, the addition ((اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنْ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنْ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ)) is not present.
And this narration is free from confusion (idtirab) and is preserved.
The Hanafis and Shafi‘is have mentioned in their books separate supplications for washing each limb:
For example, while washing the face: ((Allahumma bayyid wajhi yawma tabyaddu wujuh)), and while washing the right hand: ((Allahumma a‘tini kitabi fi yamini wa hasibni hisaban yasiran)), but these have no basis.
2:
In the chain of Tirmidhi, “Abu Idris” narrates directly from Umar radi Allahu anhu,
but the narration of Muslim is also from Zayd ibn Habab, yet in it, after “Abu Idris” comes “Jubayr ibn Nufayr from Uqbah ibn Amir, from Umar,” as Tirmidhi himself has clarified.
In any case, the addition ((اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي...)) in Tirmidhi’s narration is also present in the hadith of Thawban radi Allahu anhu with Bazzar and Tabarani.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar has mentioned it in Talkhis and remained silent about it.
(See:
al-Irwa’ Number 96,
and Sahih Abi Dawud Number 162)
Note:
(There is confusion (idtirab) in the chain,
but based on supporting narrations, this hadith with the mentioned addition is authentic.

Sahih Abi Dawud Number 162)

Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai
17: After ablution (wudu), recite the following supplications:
٭ «اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَّا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ، وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهٗ وَرَسُوْلُهٗ»
I bear witness that there is no deity (worthy of worship) except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and I bear witness that indeed Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is His (Allah’s) servant and Messenger.
[مسلم: ب 17/ 234 وترقيم دار السلام: 554]
Whoever performs a complete (prescribed) ablution and then recites this supplication (and then performs two units of prayer), the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever of them he wishes. [مسلم: 234]
Note:
In the weak narration of Sunan al-Tirmidhi (55), the addition of «اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين» is present, but this narration is weak due to a disconnected chain. Abu Idris al-Khawlani and Abu Uthman (Sa’id bin Hani’/ Musnad al-Faruq by Ibn Kathir 1/111) both did not hear anything from Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu. Also, see my book “Anwar al-Sahifah fi al-Ahadith al-Da’ifah” (no. 55).
O Allah! You are pure and all praise and glory are Yours. I bear witness that there is no deity (worthy of worship) except You. I seek forgiveness for my sins from You, and I turn in repentance to You.
(al-Nasa’i in al-Kubra: 9909 and its chain is authentic, ‘Amal al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah: 81, and al-Nasa’i said: “This is a mistake, and the correct version is mawquf (stopped at the Companion).” The mawquf narration is reported by al-Nasa’i in al-Kubra: 9910 and its chain is authentic. Both the mawquf and marfu’ (attributed to the Prophet) versions are authentic, and all praise is due to Allah.)
Note:
After ablution, it is not established to recite the supplication of ablution while raising the gaze towards the sky and pointing with the index finger. In the narration of Sunan Abi Dawud (170), in which raising the gaze towards the sky is mentioned, its chain is weak due to the unknown status of Ibn ‘Am Zuhrah (majhul). Hafiz Mundhiri has declared Ibn ‘Am Zuhrah to be unknown. (See ‘Awn al-Ma’bud 1/66, published by Farooqi Kutub Khana, Multan)
