Hadith 448

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ الْعَبْدِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُتَوَكِّلِ النَّاجِيِّ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ : " قَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِآيَةٍ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ لَيْلَةً " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ .
´Aishah narrated:` "The Prophet (S) stood (in prayer) with an Ayah from the Qur'an at night"

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is: In all the units (rak‘ahs) of the tahajjud (night) prayer, he kept reciting only this one verse repeatedly. And that noble verse was: «إن تعذبهم فإنهم عبادك وإن تغفر لهم فإنك أنت العزيز الحكيم» (Surah al-Ma’idah:), (narrated by al-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah), “O Noble Lord! If You punish them (the believers, the Muslims of my ummah), then they are Your servants, (so even when punishing them, have mercy upon them), and if You forgive them, then surely You are the Most Mighty, the Most Wise.”

﴿إِن تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِن تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ﴾ [سورة المائدة:
]
(Narrated by al-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah),
“O Noble Lord! If You punish them (the believing people of my Ummah, the Muslims), then they are Your servants,
