494. Commentary:
This ruling applies to both boys and girls, and the purpose is that as soon as a child reaches the age of discernment, the process of instructing and practicing the commands and prohibitions of the Shari‘ah, as well as other etiquettes, should begin, so that by the time they reach puberty, they become well accustomed to them.
➊ The concept of corporal punishment exists in Islam, but it is not arbitrary. For the first three years, it is, in a way, a test for the parents to rely on verbal instruction and to present a practical example themselves. After that, punishment may also be given, but such that it does not cause injury, and one should not strike the face, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has prohibited striking the face.
