Hadith Commentary:
Hunting is not permissible there.
It is also clearly evident from this hadith that Madinah is a sanctuary (haram).
It is astonishing regarding those individuals who deny that Madinah is a sanctuary, even though there are numerous explicit Prophetic ahadith regarding the sanctity of Madinah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
This narration is reported with several different wordings, for example:
la baytaha, harratayha, jabalayha, ma’zqayha.
In view of these variant wordings, the Hanafi scholars have declared this hadith to be “mudtarib” (having conflicting narrations) and have denied the sanctity (haram) of Madinah. However, there is no contradiction in these wordings, because the mountains of Madinah Tayyibah are generally black, and thus “harrah” means black stones.
“Lābah” refers to a place where black stones are found.
In this regard, the clear statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salam) declared Makkah Mukarramah to be a sanctuary (haram) and prayed for it, and I have declared Madinah Tayyibah to be a sanctuary just as Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salam) declared Makkah Mukarramah to be a sanctuary.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Buyu’, Hadith: 2129) (2)
There is no penalty or ransom for hunting in it, however, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Whoever you see hunting in Madinah Tayyibah, then the property taken from him is lawful for you.”
(Musnad Ahmad: 1/170)
The Hanafi scholars say that the sanctuary (haram) of Madinah is not, in reality, a sanctuary, nor is hunting there unlawful, even though the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that no kind of hunting should be done in the sanctuary of Madinah.
(Sahih Muslim, al-Hajj, Hadith: 3317(1362))

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Lābah refers to a place of black pebbles.
It is also called ḥarrah.
This location is situated to the east and west of Madinah.
One is called Ḥarrah Sharqiyyah (the eastern lava field) and the other Ḥarrah Gharbiyyah (the western lava field).
(2)
Banu Harithah is a branch and a small clan of the tribe of Aws.
In the pre-Islamic era, these people used to live with Banu al-Ashhal.
When a war broke out between them, Banu Harithah were defeated and went towards Khaybar and settled there, then after reconciliation they returned there.
The first time, due to lack of attention, it was said that you are outside the Haram, then after reflection and contemplation, it was said that you are indeed within the Haram.
In any case, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) declared the surrounding areas of Madinah Tayyibah as Haram.
This is the very purpose of Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) in citing this hadith.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: In these hadiths, the meaning of "not being accepted" is that no reward or recompense will be given for them, nor will they serve as expiation for sins, nor will any elevation or increase in ranks be attained through them, even though the person will not be counted among those who have abandoned them.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
By "Laba" or "Harrah" is meant a piece of land in which black-colored stones are found.
➋
On the east and west of Madinah Sharif, there are two such tracts of land, which are known as the Eastern Harrah and the Western Harrah.
The name of the Eastern Harrah is Harrah Waqim, and the name of the Western Harrah is Harrah Wabrah. (Footnote of Sahih Muslim by Muhammad Fuad Al-Baqi, Book of Hajj, Chapter: The Virtue of Madinah and Explanation of the Boundaries of Its Sanctuary)
These are the boundaries of the Haram of Madinah in the east and west.
To the north of Uhud is Mount Thawr, and to the south of Madinah is Mount ‘Ayr; these are the boundaries of the Haram of Madinah, while Mount Uhud itself is included within the Haram.

Takhrij al-Hadith: [
Jurisprudential Points:
➊ Just as Makkah al-Mukarramah is a sanctuary (haram), so too is Madinah al-Tayyibah, as is established by mutawatir (mass-transmitted) ahadith.
This has been narrated not only by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, but also by the following Companions:
● Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhu [
● Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu [
● Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd bin Asim radi Allahu anhu [
● Sayyiduna Rafi‘ bin Khadij radi Allahu anhu [
● Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari radi Allahu anhu [
● Sayyiduna Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu [صحيح مسلم: 1363] and others
◄ In opposition to these authentic, mutawatir ahadith, some people, based on self-invented doubts, say that «لا حرم للمدينة عندنا» in our view, Madinah is not a sanctuary (haram).
➋ Hunting in Madinah and cutting harmless trees and plants is forbidden, except for the idhkhir grass, for which permission has been granted.
➌ Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu was always ready to act upon the hadith of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
➍ Just like the Qur’an, hadith is also a proof (hujjah), and hadith is a form of hidden revelation (wahy khafi).
