Hadith 3913

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو السَّائِبِ سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " خَيْرُ الْأَنْصَارِ بَنُو عَبْدِ الْأَشْهَلِ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى : هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ .
´Narrated Jabir [bin 'Abdullah]:` that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The best of the Ansar are Banu 'Abdul-Ashhal."

In the previous hadith, the mention of "Banu Ashhal" comes after "Banu Najjar,"
so here the word "min" (from/among) will have to be considered omitted,
that is: Banu Ashhal are among the best families of the Ansar.

The maternal relatives of the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)’s father, Abdullah, were also from Banu Najjar.
This was the family of your (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)’s maternal uncles.
Furthermore, in Islam, lineage was also attributed to this tribe,
or it may be that their sacrifices in Islam were greater compared to other families.

(In the chain of narration, Mujalid bin Sa’eed is a weak narrator,
but based on the previous hadith, this hadith is authentic.)
