Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Harrah of Madinah is a plain where, in 63 AH, the forces of Yazid encamped when the people of Madinah refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid. He sent an army which, upon reaching Madinah, carried out a massacre there. A very large number of the Ansar were martyred in this incident. At that time, Anas (radi Allahu anhu) was in Basrah; when he received news of this, he became very grieved. The confirmation regarding Zayd ibn Arqam (radi Allahu anhu) refers to the fact that Allah the Exalted revealed Surah al-Munafiqun to affirm his testimony against the hypocrites.

Hadith Commentary:

Harrah is the name of an area around Madinah Tayyibah.
Its plain is covered with black stones.
When the people of Madinah refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid, a massacre took place there.
This is one of the darkest events in history, but historians have greatly exaggerated it.

At that time, Anas radi Allahu anhu was in Basrah.
He was deeply grieved by this incident, so to console him, Zayd ibn Arqam radi Allahu anhu wrote a letter from Kufah, the summary of which is:
Those whom Allah has forgiven should not be grieved over excessively.
In one narration, there is also mention of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplication for forgiveness for the descendants of the Ansar.
(Musnad Ahmad: 139/3)

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned this hadith because at its end there is a clear indication towards the hypocrites and the incident of the revelation of the aforementioned verse.
The incident narrated from Zayd ibn Arqam radi Allahu anhu has been detailed in previous pages, in which there is a clear mention of the hypocrites and their conduct—that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, due to some expediency, did not punish them, even though they were deserving of death.
We will clarify this in the benefits of the upcoming hadith,
by the permission of Allah Ta’ala.
