Hadith 3841

´Narrated Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] :` "There is none with more Ahadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than I, except for 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, for he used to write, (the Ahadith) and I did not used to write."

Explanation:
1:
Despite having written them down, the narrations of Abdullah ibn Amr radi Allahu anhuma are not more numerous than those of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu. This was merely his assumption that, due to writing them, they would be greater in number. Furthermore, this narration also indicates that during the Prophetic era, people used to write down the sayings of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu himself later possessed a collection of hadiths in written form. It should also be made clear that Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu made the learning and teaching of hadith his lifelong occupation. From the time he came to Madinah, he remained day and night in the company of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to acquire the knowledge of hadith. Later, from 57 AH to 58 AH, he remained engaged in its dissemination, sitting in Madinat al-Rasul and the Mosque of the Messenger. In contrast, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As radi Allahu anhuma left Madinah and took up residence in Ta’if, and perhaps for this reason, his hadiths did not reach us.
