Hadith 3774

´Narrated Buraidah:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was delivering a Khutbah to us when Al-Hasan and Al-Husain [peace be upon them] came, wearing red shirts, walking and falling down. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) descended from the Minbar and carried them, and placed them in front of him. Then he said: 'Allah spoke the Truth: Indeed, your wealth and your children are a trial (64:15). I looked at these two children walking and falling down, and I could not bear patiently anymore until I interrupted my talk and picked them up."

(al-Taghabun:15)

2:
Where this is evidence of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) perfect compassion towards children, it is also an indication of the status and rank of Hasan and Husayn (radi Allahu anhuma) in the sight of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

1414. Commentary:

➊ The command of attentive listening (insat) is for the followers (muqtadis). The Imam himself, during the Friday sermon (khutbah al-Jumu‘ah), may converse with someone or attend to a necessary task. If the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had not picked them up, his attention would have remained focused on them. In any case, the sermon would have been interrupted, so he did not deem it appropriate for them to keep falling and getting up repeatedly. Acting upon his Prophetic compassion and his merciful nature, he interrupted the sermon, picked them up, and then resumed the sermon. His recitation of this noble verse does not mean that picking up the children was a wrong action, because this act was in fact a demand of compassion and mercy. If he had not picked them up, it would not have been appropriate. Rather, the purpose of reciting this noble verse is that a person should succeed in this trial, and at the same time not go astray, not fall short in the rights of Allah (huquq Allah), nor be negligent in their rights (i.e., the rights of others). Just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) presented the best example on this occasion. Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

➋ In case of a severe necessity, it is permissible to break the continuity of the sermon, descend from the pulpit (minbar), discuss something unrelated to the topic, and then resume the sermon from where it was left off.

1586. Commentary: Love and compassion for children is a human requirement; therefore, to pause the sermon, descend from the pulpit, and pick them up out of affection and to protect them from harm is entirely in accordance with human nature. Although this may momentarily divert attention from worship, a person is obligated not only to acts of worship but also to other rulings, and neglecting them is not permissible. As for trials, both a person and everything related to him are a test; this does not establish blame unless a person is led astray because of these things. May Allah protect us. Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was a beautiful example for all mankind; therefore, in his outward actions, he would take into account common human emotions and would not make his spiritual rank and status a cause of hardship for people.

1109. Commentary:
➊ If, due to a reasonable excuse, the continuity of the sermon is interrupted or has to be interrupted, there is no harm in it.
➋ Hasan and Husayn (radi Allahu anhuma) are the best grandsons of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) called them the comfort of his soul «ريحانتاي» and gave the glad tidings that they are the leaders of the youth of Paradise. At their heartwarming mention, we, the Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah, the people of hadith, our faces brighten, our hearts are soothed, our eyes lower in reverence, and our tongues spontaneously begin to proclaim «رضي الله تعالي عنهم و أرضاهم». Those people are great oppressors who accuse us of lacking love for them. Yes, it is certainly the case that, in the name of love, we do not attribute to them the divine attributes, nor do we call them the Knower of the Unseen, the Remover of Difficulties, or the Reliever of Distress. May Allah, the Exalted, protect us from the evil of excess and deficiency, and in the Hereafter, honor us with the companionship of these accepted ones of Allah and beloveds of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). «آمين»

Benefits and Issues:

This hadith shows that wearing red clothing is permissible.
It is possible that these shirts were not purely red in color.

Showing affection to children is not contrary to the dignity of an honorable personality; rather, it is a virtue.

It is permissible to descend from the pulpit (minbar) during the sermon (khutbah) if there is a need.

The meaning of wealth and children being a trial is that often, due to love for wealth and children, a person commits wrongful acts. Therefore, a believer should act with caution so that, in the pursuit of wealth or out of love for children, he does not do anything contrary to the Shariah.

During the sermon (khutbah), there is no harm in mentioning something unrelated to the topic, provided it is necessary.
